Ex-Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari claims that Red Bull let potential World Champion Sebastien Buemi slip from their Formula 1 grasp.

The two were teammates at what is now AlphaTauri from mid-2009 to the end of 2011, when both were dropped.

Alguersuari had a brief stint in Formula E before leaving racing, while Buemi has become a FE and WEC champion, claiming four wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in addition to remaining as a Red Bull F1 reserve driver.

However, Spaniard Alguersuari claims that Swiss racer Buemi is a lost F1 champion.

Alguersuari claims

Buemi managed a best result of seventh - on debut in Australia 2009 - at a time when Toro Rosso struggled, and could not match the exploits of Sebastian Vettel, who claimed a famous win in Italy in 2008.

Buemi was dropped by the team at the same time as Alguersuari to make way for Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne for 2012.

But the now DJ believes his former teammate had the potential to become F1 World Champion.

"11 years ago we were told we were being replaced because we werent [sic] winners… lets pls [sic] forget about me for a second but just while im [sic] having my coffe [sic] i found out @Sebastien_buemi my former team mate in F1 keeps on adding wins and trophies," he wrote on Twitter.

"I forgot how many world titles he has already to his [name] and i m [sic] not just happy and proud of him but as time goes by I realised how many race wins and maybe world titles he would ve [sic] won at Red Bull racing F1.

"This is only my personal view of my team mate Sebastian Buemi based on statistics and facts. I do not want to intend what my performance would ve [sic] been."
