Fantasy Baseball: Who are the top shortstops in the MLB in 2024?
There are a trio of marquee spots on the baseball field. Come on, you know them. Pitcher, shortstop, center field. That is where every kid wants to play, where every top star is positioned on every team from tee ball to college and the MLB is no different.
Of course the pitcher has to have the arm to justify his spot, but as for center and short, those are the two positions that have to cover the greatest amount of real estate in the outfield and infield respectively.
Often seen as the captain of the infield, the shortstop is perhaps the key player when building a roster, and Fantasy baseball follows those lines. Get this one right and you have a solid launch pad to work from.
There are three players around the league who could vie for the top pick, and could perhaps be taken in any order. But since we have to make a decision, we have taken the defending World Series champion Corey Seager as our number one shortstop. As the dominant force in the Texas Rangers post season run last year, it is hard to argue that Seager should not be the man to beat.
Along side him, we place Trea Turner at number two. A fireball in Los Angeles, Turner has continued to work wonders in Philly, even if off his normal pace to begin with. The season ended with a return to form for the $300 million man. Now in his second year in Philadelphia, we look for Turner to hit the ground running this season. Expect big things.
Our number three is Bobby Witt Jr. Perhaps the only bright light in Kansas City, Witt lit up the firmament so completely that the Royals went all in on him, giving him a record setting extension for 11 years. Whether or not he can help dig KC out of the basement in the AL Central is still to be seen, but he will most certainly shine in the attempt.
Number four on our list is Francisco Lindor. Few players have been as consistently outstanding as Lindor and posted a 30-30 season last year. On the back of six straight 20 home run seasons, Lindor is a guaranteed run-maker and will make you Fantasy points day in and day out.
Rounding off our top five is Dansby Swanson. Swanson is the kind of player who is just a half-step from being the best in the league. His defense is incredible and he has hit 20-plus home runs for the last three straight seasons. The move from the Braves to the Cubs seemed to matter not a jot to his performance and Lt Dansby will continue to produce for Chicago all season.
