Squid Game became one of the biggest Korean shows to release on Netflix. Nearly, three years since its breakout premiere fans have been waiting for details about the sequel release. Finally, the wait is almost over as Netflix has announced a December 26 release date for Season 2. A third and final season has also been confirmed which is set to premiere next year in 2025.

“I am beyond excited to be writing this letter to announce the date for Season 2 and share the news of Season 3, the final season,” series director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote in a letter to fans. “The fierce clash between [Gi-hun and Front Man’s] two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year.”

What to expect from Squid Game Season 2?

For Season 2, we can expect a whole new round of vulnerable participants competing in children games for a chance to become billionaires. After beating 455 players in a series of death matches for the grand prize of 45.6 billion won, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is left resentful and vows revenge against Front Man and the puppeteers behind the games.

New cast members for Season 2 revealed so far include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an.

While details have been kept closely under wraps, Director Hwang offered a few hints as to what’s to come in a fan letter in June 2022. He mentions that the man in the suit with ddakji who recruits the contestants “might be back” and aside from the return of Gi-hun and The Front Man, he promises to introduce us to “Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.”

For those that watched Season 1, Young-hee is the creepy motion-sensing animatronic doll which eliminated 255 contestants during “Red Light, Green Light.” Cheol-su and Young-hee are both based on real-life characters seen in Korean textbooks in the ’70s and ’80s with the same name. In the new release date announcement trailer, we see a game that resembles  “Red Light, Green Light” being run around a stadium track.

Stay tuned for more details in the coming months and mark your calendars for the first episode of Squid Game Season 2 on December 26.
