In this month’s CONCACAF Nations League quarter-finals, a place at the tournament finals in March won’t be the only prize up for grabs. The eight teams involved will also be battling it out for a spot at the 2024 Copa América.

CONCACAF part of 16-team Copa América

As part of a “strategic collaboration agreement” between CONCACAF and South American soccer’s governing body, CONMEBOL, next summer’s Copa América will include six teams from the North American, Central American and Caribbean region.

What’s more, the United States is to host the event, whose 16-team line-up will be completed by CONMEBOL’s 10 member nations.

It’s far from the first time that the Copa América, which is chiefly an event contested by South American countries, has featured teams from other confederations. In 2016, indeed, the centenary Copa América also took place in the US and had a 10+6 mix of CONMEBOL and CONCACAF countries.

Which CONCACAF teams qualify for Copa América?

Despite being tournament hosts, the US aren’t guaranteed a place at the 2024 Copa América, which is to be played in June and July next year.

CONCACAF’s six qualifying nations will be the four teams that progress from the 2023/24 Nations League quarter-finals, plus two of the losing last-eight sides. The four beaten quarter-finalists will go into a Copa América play-in round to be held in Frisco, Texas, in March 2024.

Which teams are in the 2023/24 Nations League quarter-finals?

CONCACAF’s four top-ranked teams - the US, Mexico, Canada and Costa Rica - all qualified automatically for the Nations League quarter-finals. They have been joined by the top two teams from each of the two league-phase groups in League A, the Nations League’s elite division: Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The pairings for the two-legged quarter-final ties were determined based on teams’ CONCACAF ranking, with each seeded country facing the lowest-ranked group-stage qualifier available.
