Intending to unwind and catch the Manchester United vs Liverpool match later that day, Sutton headed to a familiar hotel bar near Ibrox. However, his plan for a quiet evening took a surprising turn.

Recounting his experience on BBC’s Monday Night Club, Sutton revealed, “After Rangers v Celtic, I went to a hotel just around the corner from Ibrox, and there were hundreds of Rangers fans in this bar, and I just had to get out. They were putting scarves on my shoulders and things like that, and I thought ‘sod this, I need to get out of here!'”

Despite initially seeking to enjoy the match on the hotel’s big screens while sipping a coffee, the presence of about 600 Rangers fans soon made Sutton feel uneasy. “I normally go to this hotel, have a coffee, watch the Football. Unfortunately, there were about 600 Rangers fans. I started to feel uncomfortable!” he explained.

Some of the fans were friendly, but the atmosphere began to feel more intimidating, especially when he needed to walk through the crowd. “Some of them were nice enough but I thought I was going to get lynched when I went to the toilet,” Sutton said.

His fellow pundit, Mark Chapman, humorously questioned Sutton’s decision to stay in the bar despite the obvious majority of Rangers fans, asking, “So you saw it was full of Rangers fans and you thought ‘d’you know what, I’ll give it a go anyhow? I’m sure everything will be fine?’”

To which Sutton admitted that he had misjudged the situation, responding, “I did think that and then quickly thought this probably isn’t a good idea. So I left.”

This incident highlights the intense rivalry and passionate fan bases of both clubs, which can lead to unexpected and sometimes uncomfortable situations, even for seasoned professionals like Sutton.
