Former Celtic striker turned pundit Chris Sutton remains unconvinced by the Hoops’ summer addition of central defender Auston Trusty.

The American joined the Bhoys on transfer deadline day for £6m from English Championship outfit Sheffield United.

Trusty had to wait for his opportunity, but due to a key injury to star centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers, he has started his side’s last five comPetitive Games.

After returning from international duty with the USA, the 26-year-old again began for the Bhoys yesterday in their disappointing 2-2 draw with Aberdeen.

Sutton remains unconvinced by the defender and has many worries when Carter-Vickers is absent, as he spoke about Celtic’s defensive concerns on Sky Sports this morning.

“I think there are concerns mainly because Cameron Carter-Vickers, their rock, the best defender at the club, hasn’t been there for a while,” he said.

“Every time Celtic take the field and he’s not playing, I worry. They’re not the same defensively.

“Trusty has come in [with] big shoes to fill – I’m not so sure at this moment in time that he’s filled them adequately.”

In fairness to the former Arsenal man, he isn’t playing on his favoured side of centre-back.

It is better to judge Trusty when he plays as a left-sided centre-half alongside his fellow countryman Carter-Vickers.

And with the man nicknamed ‘fridge’ by his Celtic teaMMAtes knocking on the door of an injury return ahead of Wednesday’s match against Atalanta, whether Trusty will keep his place in the team remains to be seen.

One certain thing, though, is if Carter-Vickers makes it back midweek, Brendan Rodgers and Co. will have an almighty boost ahead of an arduous European tie on the road.
