Chelsea revealed to hold substantial Jamal Musiala sell-on clause
Chelsea could pocket a substantial windfall should Bayern Munich decide to cash in on attacking superstar Jamal Musiala amid transfer links with Manchester City and Liverpool.
Very few players in the world could improve either side but Musiala is one of them thanks to his creativity and vision that have made him arguably Bayern and Germany's most important player at just 21 years of age – he was among the nominees for the Ballon d'Or in 2023.
Musiala has been with Bayern since he was 16 but spent the majority of his early life in England and was part of Chelsea’s prolific youth academy for eight years. Chelsea pocketed a nominal £170,000 in compensation when he joined Bayern in 2019, but the Daily Mail has reported the Blues had the foresight to have a sell-on clause inserted into the agreement at the time.
Chelsea don't have a buy-back option on Musiala and so hold no right to an automatic return to west London, but they are entitled to 20% of the transfer fee should Bayern sell. Hypothetically, that would see an £80m transfer equate to a £16m windfall.
While Bayern will have no motivation to sell, Musiala will enter the final two years of his current contract at the end of this season and there will be pressure to agree a new deal befitting his world class status given that his existing terms were signed back in 2021. It is an issue that Bayern have so far encountered in trying to secure Alphonso Davies' long-term future.
Musiala was born in Germany but moved to England at the age of seven. He initially joined Southampton's academy before linking up with Chelsea in 2011. His residence and Education in England made him eligible to represent his adopted country at international level and he turned out for Under-16, Under-17 and Under-21 sides for the junior lions.
He represented the latter two even after moving his club career back to Germany, but when it down to it his final choice was the country of his birth and he was selected for Euro 2020.
