A born talent

Born in 1991, Charles Otto Puth Jr. is native to New Jersey. His father was a builder and real estate agent, while his mother was a music teacher and commercial writer for HBO. It’s safe to assume that his musical talents come from his mother’s side, and the young Puth started learning the piano when he was only four years old. By the time he was ten, he had moved into jazz. When he was only two years old a fatal dog bite caused his brow to scar permanently, which later became his signature (like Harry Potter).

Puth attended the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College from seventh grade onwards, and in his senior year of high school, he majored in jazz piano with a minor in classical studies. To further hone his musical skills, he studied music production and engineering at Berklee College of Music and graduated in 2013.

Charlie was severely bullied in high school

Born as a musical prodigy, Charlie grew up feeling different from his school peers. Many of his classmates were offended by his uniqueness, leading to severe verbal bullying and abuse in his schooling years. “I was basically bullied because I was unique, I was different than everybody,” Charlie told Teen Vogue. “I would hear music in my head. I chose to be the black sheep. Everyone reacted to that strangely. I never went to prom or anything like that, but some amazing things happened in my life.”

But, instead of trying to fit in, Puth took pride in his abilities and grew to love himself even more. After becoming a successful artist, Puth collaborated with CustomInk during National Bullying Prevention Month, encouraging others to “Be Unique.” He also confronted his cyber bullies or haters who wrote negative comments on his posts and offered them necessary assistance.

Breaking the taboo, Puth has also openly talked about his anxiety, from suffering nervous breakdowns to getting over a breakup and how the circumstances have affected his life. By sharing his personal experiences, Puth encourages fans to talk about their mental health.

Humble beginnings

Puth created his YouTube channel, named Charlie’s Vlogs, in 2009, where he posted comedy videos and acoustic covers of different tracks. The first original song he posted on the channel accompanied by a music video is These Are My Sexy Shades, and to say That’s Hilarious would be an understatement. After that, Puth continued making new music and released an EP named The Otto Tunes. In 2011, he participated in an online competition Can You Sing?, where he performed a cover of Adele’s Someone Like You and blew everyone away.

Impressed by his musical brilliance, the comedian Ellen DeGeneres signed him under her label eleveneleven and gave him the opportunity to perform on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Sadly, things did not work out between Charlie and eleveneleven, with the singer sharing after, “Not putting any blame on one person, but from a collective… all the people that were in that room, they just disappeared”.

In 2013, Charlie released his second independent EP Ego. At long last, he signed with Atlantic Records and Artist Partner Group, releasing his debut single Marvin Gaye featuring singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor in 2015. The song went double Platinum in Australia, charting in several different countries. Later that year, Puth appeared on Megan’s Dear Future Husband music video as her love interest.

Puth also lent his creative genius to the Furious 7 soundtrack song See You Again alongside Wiz Khalifa, which was composed as a tribute to the late actor Paul Walker. As co-producer and writer of the song, Puth also captivated everyone with his falsetto vocals. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 list for twelve non-consecutive weeks while garnering three Grammy nominations. In 2015, Puth released his third EP Some Type of Love with five new tracks.

Charlie has an exceptional music career

Charlie’s debut album Nine Track Mind dropped in 2016, debuting at No. 3 in the UK and No. 6 on Billboard 200. He also collaborated with Selena Gomez on the song We Don’t Talk Anymore for his debut album. His next album Voicenotes came out in 2018, after his first live concert on the Nine Track Mind Tour. The lead single Attention became an instant hit, featuring his infectious production and smooth vocals. He also joined forces with American singer-songwriter Kehlani for the single Done For Me.

Voicenotes received overall positive feedback and reviews from critics and music lovers alike. Charlie Puth then embarked on the Voicenotes Tour with musical guest Hailee Steinfeld, further boosting his net worth.

In the second half of 2019, Charlie released three singles I Warned Myself, Mother, and Cheating On You. However, in early 2020, Puth announced that he did not like his past work, and scraped everything he had done for his third studio album. A few months later, he released another song named Girlfriend and Hard on Yourself featuring Blackbear.

After that, Charlie started documenting his musical process, which included turning random noises into pop songs on TikTok. These endeavours soon went viral, leading to the release of Light Switch. The song became a massive success as the first single of his third studio album, Charlie. Puth also collaborated with BTS Jungkook for the song Left & Right from Charlie, which was released in October.

Last year, Charlie released Lipstick, the lead single for his next album, which is yet to be announced.

Puth has collaborated and written songs for many other artists

Charlie Puth is not only a talented singer and performer, but also a sought-after songwriter who has penned hits for various artists. Here’s a glimpse into some of his songwriting credits for other artists. His breakout song See You Again was a collaborative track with Wiz Khalifa. While Wiz Khalifa holds the writing credits for the rap lyrics, the rest of the emotive ballad is credited to Puth. But before Puth even came into the spotlight, he co-wrote the song Celebrate on Pitbull’s eighth studio album Globalization, and I Feel Good for Thomas Rhett featuring Lunchmoney Lewis.

In 2015, Charlie produced Trey Songz’s song Slow Motion and also collaborated with Lil Wayne on the song Nothing But Trouble for the 808: The Movie soundtrack. Moreover, Puth also co-wrote and produced the songs Broke and Pull Up on Jason Derulo’s album Everything Is 4, and penned the track Bombastic with Bonnie McKee for that same album. Additionally, Puth also produced Working Class Heroes (Work) for CeeLo Green’s Heart Blanche. Beyond that, Puth also has writing credits on Maroon 5’s hit track Lips on You, One Direction member Liam Payne’s solo song Bedroom Floor, and G-Eazy’s single Sober. He was even featured on the track Oops by the pop girl band Little Mix for their album Glory Days (Expanded Edition) and co-wrote the hit Easier for the boyband 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS).

In 2021, Puth collaborated with musical legend Elton John for the song After All, which was part of John’s album The Lockdown Sessions. In the same year, Puth also co-wrote and produced the single Stay for Justin Bieber and The Kid Laroi, which turned out to be one of the biggest hits of that year. History repeated itself as Puth returned to the Fast & Furious franchise, featuring on the song Angel Pt. 2 alongside BTS Jimin, independent artist Jvke, and Muni Long for the Fast X soundtrack.

The revenue of these songs also adds a substantial amount to the net worth of Charlie Puth.

He has a perfect pitch

Charlie started learning to play the piano when he was only four, and throughout his Education, he gained a deep knowledge of music, especially Jazz. But ever since he started learning music, Puth has been blessed with the rare talent of recognising and playing musical notes in an instant without referring to other notes — the perfect pitch.

Puth has proved his talent on many different occasions. According to him, he first realised his talent when he was 12 years old and played the piano at his church only by memory. Other than Charlie, BTS Jung Kook, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston are a few other artists who also demonstrate this rare talent.

The current net worth of Charlie Puth

The viral YouTube sensation turned popstar and social media legend Charlie Puth earns his net worth from a few different sources. To date, he has released three studio albums, with a fourth album currently in the works. He has several megahits to his name including the ones he has written and produced music for other artists. He has also had a partnership with clothing brand Hollister Co., which has been in place since 2017. According to Celebrity Net Worth, singer-songwriter Charlie Puth is currently worth around USD 35 million.

Personal life

Puth’s romantic life first hit headlines when he released the single We Don’t Talk Anymore with Selena Gomez. The duo’s connection was obvious during their on-stage performance. Charlie, blinded by his newfound love, even ranted “F–ck you Justin Bieber” (Justin and Selena famously dated on and off until 2018) while on stage. However, Puth quickly apologised to the singer on X.

Sadly, Puth and Gomez’s love was short-lived. While talking about the song, he said, “I don’t kiss and tell, but the only way a song like that can come across as real is if there’s something else going on behind the scenes,” Puth also added, “And that’s what was happening [with Selena]. Very short-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up… And she evoked such good emotion on that song, it was a pleasure working with her. That’s why I’m always happy to sing it, even though it came from a dark point in my life.” This knowledge has led fans to speculate that Charlie’s other hit Attention was also inspired by Gomez.

Following the Selena Gomez drama, Puth ignited romance rumours with singer-actress Bella Thorne. But, Puth’s relationship with Thorne would end before it even had the chance to begin, with Puth (accidentally) accusing her of cheating on him with her ex Tyler Posey on social media. Two weeks after the two began hanging out together, Puth came upon an old story about Bella and Tyler’s relationship, and without noticing the date, he tweeted “I don’t know Tyler personally, but I know he shouldn’t be treated this way.”

Almost immediately, Bella tweeted, “Ty and I have been broken up for like over two weeks and Charlie and I ARENT DATING we are friends. That article was written forever ago.”

The gifted musician was often the subject of dating speculations. In 2017, it was revealed that the singer had been secretly dating actress Danielle Campbell after he shared a screenshot of him face-timing with her. Puth even claimed that he is ‘in a relationship’, but did not specify with whom; the other party never confirmed the claims.

In 2018, Charlie and Halston Sage fuelled dating suspicions after Sage posted photos of the couple on Instagram. They were seen together on multiple public outings, but their relationship soon came to an end. After that, he started seeing fellow singer-songwriter Charlotte Lawrence, but unfortunately, that was not to last, either.

After a series of high-profile relationships followed by a period of radio silence, Charlie eventually admitted to Howard Stern in an October 2022 interview that he was dating someone. A few months later, Charlie’s romantic birthday post for his girlfriend went viral, revealing that she is none other than Brooke Sansone, a digital marketing and PR coordinator. Charlie and Brooke are now engaged. Puth announced their engagement with a sweet Instagram post, writing, “I flew to New York to ask my best friend to marry me, and she said yes. I am the happiest, best version of myself and it is all because of you Brookie. I love you endlessly forever and ever and ever.”

Real Estate

In 2015 Charlie bought a USD 1.9 million property in Hollywood Hills. In 2018, he listed his house for sale with an asking price of USD 2.2 million; it eventually sold for USD 1.8 million.

Puth also owns a property in Beverly Hills’ Trousdale Estates neighbourhood. The four-bedroom mansion was built in 1965 and is located in Trousdale Estates, a sought-after neighbourhood in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains recognised for its mid-century homes. According to the listing with Kurt Rappaport of Westside Estate Agency, it is one of only a few two-story residences in the enclave, which is largely made up of one-story properties. The 4,800-square-foot home is private and gated and has a gourmet kitchen with commercial appliances, a family room, a dining room, and a stunning two-story living room. There is also a main suite with a spa-like bathtub, an office, and a studio. Puth put the house up for sale in December 2023 for USD 16.995 million. In April 2024, he reduced the price to around USD 15 million.
