There have been six or fewer total goals scored in seven of Montreal’s past eight games, a trend that is a product of multiple variables. First, the offense has gone cold, averaging just 2.1 goals per game over that stretch.

On the season, the Habs now rank in the bottom 10 of the league in goals scored per game, shots on goal per game, power play percentage, and shooting percentage. Based on their underlying metrics, positive regression is unlikely as they rank 29th in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60).

That is certainly not a traditionally “dominating” stat line, but that is more so a result of the play in front of him as he has played tremendously. Montembeault has now allowed three or fewer goals in seven of his past eight starts, posting a .905 SV% and 2.85 GAA over that stretch.

There were six or fewer total goals scored in seven of those eight outings. Making that stretch even more impressive is some of the offenses he has faced along the way, including Carolina, Toronto, Boston, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

That is a “murderer’s row” of offensive firepower, so, therefore, I am not too worried about Colorado and its elite offense.

My best bet: Under 6.5 (+100 at SIA)

Also, we need to add that this game will be played at Ball Arena, where the Avalanche are a commanding 28-6 this season. Finally, goaltender Justus Annunen is slated to guard the cage for Colorado.

Through eight starts this year, Annunen is 5-2-1 with a commanding .926 SV% and 2.38 GAA.
