Asian Artists to Watch 2024: Atreyu Moniaga

Actor, filMMAker, and multifaceted artist Atreyu Moniaga from Jakarta produces work that explores the hidden narratives of symbolism. His artistic journey involves introspection and revelation, utilising illustration and photography to explore themes of self-discovery and acceptance.

Moniaga’s artistry, iNFLuenced by the lyrical prowess of Jewel and the surreal visuals of James Jean and Takashi Murakami, explores themes of self-reflection and life’s essence. The latest testament of this was his solo exhibition of whimsical paintings at ART SG, the positive feedback for which signified recognition of his artistic revelation of self-discovery.

Beyond illustrations and photography, Moniaga is also a lecturer and actor. He’s been on an artistic journey since childhood, drawing inspiration from fantasy tales and whimsical watercolour illustrations. Although grim, his photographic work retains his signature surreal element. His foray into acting in Lucky Kuswandi’s The Fox Exploits The Tiger’s Might marked an impressive debut, showcasing his talent at the Cannes Film Festival’s Semaine de La Critique. Moniaga’s work, a celebration of personal exploration and creative expression, invites viewers into a world where art forms converge, each piece a fragment of his introspective journey.
