Celtic midfielder Arne Engels has admitted he didn’t even hear Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland attempting to put him off scoring a penalty a few weeks ago.

The Belgian international stepped up against the Jambos on his first Hoops start and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner, sending a helpless Craig Gordon the wrong way in the process.

It was a clever spot-kick from Engels, who was being taunted by Shankland and his Hearts teaMMAte Craig Halkett as he stepped up to the mark.

The 21-year-old has since admitted, though, that he didn’t even hear the two opposition players mouthing off.

“I saw it in a video, actually, but I didn’t hear it in the stadium”, he said (Sky Sports).

“You’re in the zone and you don’t hear anything if you’re in the zone.”

Engels kept his cool to smartly score against the Jambos.

He then netted from 12 yards the following midweek against Slovan Bratislava in the UEFA Champions League.

After an underwhelming display against Ross County yesterday, Celtic’s club record signing is now once more jetting out to play for his country during the international break.

Belgium will face Italy and France in UEFA Nations League action this month before Engels returns to Glasgow for an arduous run of seven matches in just 21 days, starting with a table-topping clash against Aberdeen next weekend.

Parkhead will be rocking when the Dons come to Glasgow for a traditional 3pm kick-off a week on Saturday.
