Aima Baig breaks silence on predators in showbiz
Pakistani singer Aima Baig has announced her intention to launch a #MeToo movement in Pakistan, aiming to empower women and fight against predators and cheaters. The announcement came through her Instagram stories following her performance at a show in Jeddah and her subsequent Umrah pilgrimage.
In a series of posts, Baig expressed that her Umrah experience had strengthened her resolve to address issues facing women in Pakistan. “After performing my Umrah – so peacefully and to be honest I needed it so badly and it made me so strong because I know I had to do this for the betterment and the empowerment of our country’s women,” she wrote.
The singer revealed that she had been aware of “certain predators – cheaters – users – ruining minor to aged girls” for some time but had previously remained silent, a decision she now regrets. Baig clarified that while she wasn’t necessarily speaking about herself as a victim, she was referring to women around her.
Expressing concern over the normalisation of cheating and the exploitation of women’s naivety and innocence, Baig stated, “It’s like cheating has become a norm and using women for their naivety, innocence, lack of sophistication is a joke.”
In a subsequent post, the singer officially announced her intention to start the #MeToo movement in Pakistan. She emphasised the prevalence of such issues, saying, “Because I have had it happening around me way too much. Us women are no joke – we gave these men the existence and one must value and respect that.”
Recognising her iNFLuential position, Baig urged all women to acknowledge and address what she described as an “ongoing fun thing for men.” She highlighted the mental and physical depression experienced by young, unaware women due to these risks.
This announcement comes shortly after Baig had shared her plans to leave Pakistan for an extended period following her Umrah. Earlier this year, the singer appeared as a guest on Ahmad Ali Butt’s podcast and unpacked details of her widely discussed breakup with ex-fiancé, actor and model Shahbaz Shigri.
Baig insisted that despite the split, she and Shahbaz are on good terms, maintaining “a civil relationship and checking up on each other regularly”. The singer acknowledged the strong connection they once shared, stating, “Our vibe together was too good, even today.” On the subject of settling down, she maintained, “I think I was not ready, but at the same time, I really liked the person.”
