2024 Olympics women's soccer futures odds, best bets: Proven expert reveals picks to win, teams to fade
The USWNT displayed their dominance in the first five Olympic women's soccer tournaments, but the rest of the world appear to have caught up. The Americans look to end their gold-medal drought when they take part in the 2024 Summer Olympics competition, which begins on July 25 - one day before the Opening Ceremony. The USWNT captured Olympic gold in four of the first five women's tournaments and settled for silver in the other after losing to Norway in sudden death in 2000. After beating Japan for the gold medal in 2012, Team USA was defeated by Sweden in the quarterfinals at the Rio Games and fell to Canada in the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics before edging Australia for bronze. Germany took the gold in 2016, while Canada enter this year's competition as defending champions.
The latest 2024 Olympics odds list the U.S. as +160 favorites, while Spain are +200. Host France are +375 and Germany sit at +1000, while Canada are one of three teams at +1600 in the 2024 Olympic Games odds. Before locking in any 2024 Summer Olympics futures picks or predictions, you need to see what SportsLine soccer expert Martin Green has to say.
After working in the sports betting industry for several years, Green became a professional sports writer and handicapper and has covered the game worldwide. Last year, Green was profitable in multiple areas on his soccer picks, including the Champions League (+3.05 units), FA Cup (+3.07), EFL Cup (+4.47) and Euro 2024 qualifiers (+6.30), among others. He also was solid with his Premier League picks this year, going 30-22-1 (+7.07).
Now, Green has broken down the 2024 Olympics women's soccer tournament from every possible angle and revealed which teams you should back and which teams you should completely avoid. You can visit SportsLine now to see his 2024 Summer Olympics picks.
Top 2024 Summer Olympics predictions
One surprise: Green is avoiding France, who are seeking their first Olympic medal in women's soccer. The French have made only two previous appearances in the Summer Games and had their hopes dashed by Canada both times. France were defeated 1-0 in the bronze medal match at the 2012 London Olympics and suffered an identical loss in the quarterfinals at Rio four years later.
The French will have to contend with Canada again in this year's tournament, as the clubs both reside in Group A and will square off in their second group-stage match. They also enter the Paris Olympics having lost two of their final three contests in the Euro 2025 qualifying group stage. Most recently, France were defeated 3-1 by the Republic of Ireland on July 16, with Vicki Becho scoring the club's lone goal. The 20-year-old forward, who helped Olympique Lyonnais to their third straight and 17th overall Premiere Ligue championship in 2023-24, is a reserve on the nation's 2024 Olympic team.
"France have won just one major tournament, the 2017 SheBelieves Cup," Green said. "Recent campaigns have been scuppered by injuries to key players and infighting amongst the squad. Les Bleus are No. 2 in the FIFA world rankings, but they were comprehensively outplayed by Spain in the Nations League final earlier this year, so it is hard to justify betting on them to win Olympic gold."
