The 2024 Olympic Games are just over four months away, with the action in Paris to get underway on 26 July and run through to 11 August. As ever, basketball will be one of the event’s main draws, with 12 nations competing to take home the iconic gold medal.

Which countries will compete in the 2024 Olympics men’s basketball tournament?

Along with host nation France, seven countries have qualified for the men′s tournament, with South Sudan, Canada, the United States, Japan, Germany, Serbia and Australia booking their spots by virtue of their performances at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The other four places will be taken by the winners of qualifying tournaments that will take place in Valencia (Spain), Riga (Latvia), Piraeus (Greece) and San Juan (Puerto Rico) in the first week of July.

How does the Group Phase work? Which teams qualify for the Final Phase?

The two teams are divided into three groups (A, B and C) of four teams each. Each country will play the others in their group once (a total of three Games), with the top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams across the three groups progressing to the Final Phase.

The tournament will then switch to a knockout format, starting with the quarter-finals. A draw will determine the pairings for the last eight, with the best ranked team from the Group Phase facing the worst, the second best facing the second worst, and so on.

Teams who were in the same group cannot play against each other in the quarter-finals.

Who will USA play in the Group Phrase at the 2024 Olympic Games?

The United States, ranked number one in the world, will play against Serbia (ranked four), South Sudan (ranked 33) and the winner of the qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico (Bahrain, Côte d’Ivoire, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico or Puerto Rico) in Group C.
