A $5 million prize purse will be up for grabs at the 2024 Kentucky Derby, whose 150th edition is due to take place at Churchill Downs today.

Per The Athletic’s Andrew DeWitt and Drew Jordan, only the Breeders’ Cup Classic - a race held at alternating venues every November - has a larger purse among American events, at $7 million.

How is Kentucky Derby prize money distributed?

Of the $5 million purse at the 2024 Derby, which is distributed among the first five finishers, $3.1 million will go the victor, with $1 million due to the runner-up.

According to a prize-money breakdown by racing expert Keeler Johnson, the horse’s owner typically takes home 80% of the payout, with 10% each shared out to the jockey and the trainer.

The Kentucky Derby, a race commonly known as the “greatest two minutes in Sports”, is to be held today, Saturday 4 May 2024, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

According to the official race day schedule, the Derby is slated to take place at 6:57pm ET/3:57pm PT. Viewers in the United States will be able to watch the event on NBC and Peacock.
