10 Best Islands to Visit in January

While January is one of the coldest months in the Northern Hemisphere, many islands in more southern locales are basking in high temperatures and sunny days. After all, it’s summer in the Southern Hemisphere!

Imagine escaping winter and landing on a faraway island where cocktails flow and the sun sets over the sparkling sea.

Whether you dream of dancing the night away to Calypso music in sultry Barbados or surfing in Maui. Somewhere, there is an enchanted island where you can unwind and enjoy the slower pace of coastal living.

Phuket, Thailand

Hot, sunny days, incredible beauty, pulsating night markets and world-class beaches… Phuket has it all and January is one of the best times of year to visit.

The 45-meter Big Buddha Statue welcomes visitors to the island. The mix of secluded and crowded party beaches and the charms of historic Old Town keep them coming back.

Striking Buddhist temples, like Wat Chalong, dot the landscape. Phuket’s street food, consisting of Thai delights and delicacies, is known the world over. In January, you can join in on vibrant Chinese New Year festivities and experience dragon dances, lights and beats.

Barbados, Caribbean

The best thing about Barbados, besides the lovely weather, is it’s so small. You can see the entire island in a day! However, it’s best to take your time exploring this little gem.

In January, it’s very hot. Fortunately, there are plenty of sandy beaches and patios to enjoy some of the island’s famous rum. The Golf courses are world-class and you can even take a ride on a real submarine in Bridgetown Harbor.

Another cool place to explore is Harrison’s Cave where you’ll see an underground lake and stunning stalactites. The rugged and scenic Bathsheba area makes for a wonderful day trip.

Maui, Hawaii, USA

The weather cools down in Maui in January, but not by much. It’s perfect weather for hiking, Golfing and walking the beautiful beaches.

There are fewer crowds too. This means you can peacefully browse the village markets and have Haleakala National Park almost all to yourself! The rainforest scenery along the Hana Highway makes for a lovely drive and the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium is a must-see for all ages.

Whale watching is one of the top things to do in January or head to Lahaina to take in a traditional Luau celebration. January is when the waves are biggest in Maui and watching surfers tackle them is an awe-inspiring experience!

Anna Maria Island, Florida, USA

If you’ve never heard of Anna Maria Island, it’s time to put this gulf island on your radar! With warm temperatures, a laid-back environment and miles of sandy beaches, Anna Maria Island is the perfect getaway in January.

One of the best ways to explore Anna Maria is by bicycle. Head out along the coast and on remote bike paths and visit boutiques and art studios along the way. The island is also known for its fabulous seafood restaurants.

Tasmania, Australia

Most people wouldn’t think of far-flung Tasmania as a vacation destination, but they should! With warm temperatures and more sunny days than not, January is a perfect time to explore its natural wonders.

Whether dining on local seafood, browsing Salamanca Market or admiring fine art at the MONA, there’s always something to do.

Explore Horseshoe Falls and Cataract Gorge. Go hiking on the Overland Track. Feeling particularly brave? Try whitewater rafting on the Franklin River.

Port Arthur Historic Site is a former penal colony where you’ll learn about a darker side of Tasmania’s History. At Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, you’ll see kangaroos, wombats and Tasmanian devils.
