You’ll Soon Be Able to Stay The Night in a Nakagin Capsule
There is some good news regarding the fate of Kisho Kurokawa’s Nakagin Capsules from the now-decommissioned landmark hotel.
A prime example of Japan‘s architectural Metabolism movement, not to mention one of the last remaining examples, the Nakagin Capsule Tower Building was a sight to behold with its 140 self-contained prefabricated capsules. Completed in the early ’70s, the Nakagin’s capsules were originally intended for hotel use for Travelling Businessmen, but over the years, the entire build fell in disarray, prompting the demolition in 2022.
Looking to save such a relic, the Regeneration Project was formed to where they were able to preserve 23 capsules for museums and historic preservation. But wait, there’s more, thanks to “Hello! Renovation,” we now know that people will once again be able to experience living in one of these capsules.
Five of these salvaged capsules will be brought back to life with a redesigned interior. These capsules will be placed at a scenic point at Soleil no Oka in Kanagawa where guests can watch the sunrise and sunset near the coast. “Hello! RENOVATION is currently holding a comPetition for the final design of the five capsules and should have the winner announced in late May.
