It is one of the most famous UFO sightings in history due to the large number of eyewitness witnesses and records of the incident. The date, March 13, 1997. Although the pseudoskeptics insist on dividing the incident into two different events to try to outline a prosaic explanation, the truth is that it is only one, contemplated by thousands of people and happened in a range of 480 km, from the periphery of the State of Nevada including Phoenix, in Arizona.

Initial reports were in Henderson, Nevada, where a man reported seeing a vast object streaking across the sky, heading northwest-southeast and characterized by “half a dozen distinct lights on its front.” Reports would follow in Arizona and the Prescott and Prescott Valley areas, where multiple testimonials described “a formation of lights Traveling together.” However, different people called the local authorities, mentioning that it was a solid object that carried these lights, since when moving through the night sky “it blocked the view of the stars.”

The altitude at which this large UFO was moving was not determined, but all the deponents agreed that it did not emit any sound.

In the town of Dewey, 10 miles east of Prescott, Arizona, six people reported seeing a vast array of lights as they drove north on Highway 69.
First sightings in Phoenix

Tim Ley and his family were the first to see the lights as they even flew over Prescott Valley, 100 km from where they were. And although at first it appeared to be objects arranged in the skies in an arc formation, when it passed over their heads —after about 10 minutes— the separation between the lights widened considerably and the declarants could see that it was a huge object. in the figure of a “carpenter’s square” the one that had these lights embedded in its design, “five in total, with one at the tip and two on each side”.

Flying object carrying the “Phoenix lights” according to the declarants.

The object continued on its way towards Phoenix, where later witnesses in Glendale, a northern suburb of this city, observed it pass at a high altitude between 8:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.
mass event

When the triangular object entered the Phoenix area, trucker Bill Greiner, who was still working, was one of the first to spot it: “I’ll never be the same again. Prior to this, if anyone had observed a UFO to me, I would have responded, “sure, and I believe in fairies.” But currently I have a totally different perspective, and even if I am a stupid trucker, I know that I have observed something that does not belong to this planet, “he said when recounting his experience, adding that the lights were present in the skies for more than two hours.

The declarants and calls to the authorities demanding an explanation multiplied rapidly that night (see video above).
The explanations of the debunkers

The Air Force (USAF), later and under public pressure, would say that the stationary lights in the shape of a V over Phoenix were flares released by aircraft in a military exercise. Although they would not give any explanation for the other sightings that were coming from the State of Nevada on the same day. For the latter, skeptics argue that they were planes in formation, although they are unable to clarify the fact that no sound was reported from such planes or why military planes would fly over such a large, interstate area, and then drop flares on them. one of the most populous cities in Arizona. For this reason, they insist on separating the event into two parts, an authentic and desperate apology for chance in the face of an extramundane sighting of enormous proportions.
