As they say, game respects game and that’s plain to see in the French sensation’s take on the WNBA’s biggest star. With both being new to the professional game, it’s refreshing to see that one can learn lessons in the attitude and performance of the other.

Victor Wembanyama is about Caitlin Clark’s game

When the curtain comes down on 2024, there will be two names that will likely dominate conversations for basketball fans: the San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama and the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark. Where the latter is concerned, the former Iowa State star has taken the basketball world by storm as her games have garnered incredible ratings for the women’s game.

On the flip side, ‘Wemby’ as he has become known to fans has shown without a doubt that he is the generational talent that many believe him to be. It is with that as the context that we come to Wembanyama’s recent comments about Clark. Indeed, speaking about the Fever’s star guard, the Frenchman explained that she is in fact the player that inspires him the most in today’s game.

“When she was in college, the only college player that I was really in awe of the game, you know,” Wembanyama said of Clark. “I’m saying men’s and women’s college basketball, she’s probably the most impressive I’ve seen.” Do recall that on the way to the national championship game, Clark broke college basketball’s all-time scoring record before being drafted as the No. 1 overall pick - like Wembanyama - in this year’s WNBA Draft. As mentioned before, she is now the league’s Rookie of the Year.

Truthfully, it has been an incredible year for both stars, winning their respective awards by unanimous decision. Yet, both will undoubtedly be disappointed by the lack of postseason play that they were able to enjoy. Perhaps when the Spurs meet the Pacers on January 23rd next year, they can meet to have a chat about how to change that.
