With the transfer window now open, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of the forthcoming season.

There are several areas of the team which need looking at this summer, midfield being one.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Hoops are tracking standout Dundee performer Luke McCowan. A move for the midfielder might not be so bad.

In the season gone by, the 26-year-old scored 10 goals and registered five assists in 37 Scottish Premiership appearances.

A regular for Tony Docherty’s side, McCowan was instrumental in their surprise top-six finish.

Should he come to Celtic, while he won’t be someone Rodgers calls upon in the Champions League and title-defining matches, the midfielder would be an adept squad option a la Jonny Hayes.

He would count towards the homegrown quota for Europe and one would be comfortable with him playing run-of-the-mill league matches such as Kilmarnock at home or Ross County away.

Plucking the best performers from the Scottish top flight is something Celtic should continually look to do and with just a year left on his deal at Dens Park, the boyhood Hoops fan could be available for a cut-price figure.

Currently valued at just over £500,000 by Transfermarkt, signing McCowan for such a fee seems like a no-brainer.

He gives his all, never stops running, is adept in the press, and can score goals. Able to play across the middle of the park and out wide, too, the Scot, who is coming into his peak years, would be an astute signing that adds further depth to a double-winning side.
