Famous win for New York Red Bulls

Inter Miami had made an impressive start to the 2024 campaign but they were thoroughly outplayed by NYRB. Former Miami forward Lewis Morgan was decisive for the hosts, scoring three and creating a fourth to pile the pain on his former employer. 

Miami were without some key players, but this performance will be a real concern for Tata Martino going forward.

New York Red Bulls run out 4-0 winners over a sub-par Inter Miami side. A real statement performance from NYRB!

Inter Miami clip another ball forward towards Campana but he can't bring it down. The Herons have ran out of ideas here, a chastening defeat for Tata Martino's side. 

Luis Suarez bundles through the challenges on the edge of the box to make space for a shot. It's a decent opening but he snatches at the shot and it bounces wide of the post. 

It's a little surprising to see Suarez, Busquets and Jordi Alba remaining on the field until the very end. Their legs will need to be rested this season and there's been nothing left for Miami to play for in the past 20 minutes. 

There will be five minutes of added time, the fourth official has announced. 

The Herons have been poor but young Alfonso has shown something on the left wing for them in the second half. He looks pacey and direct and a useful contrast to Miami's more stationary forwards. 

Inter Miami are nearly on the scoreboard as Sean Nealis deflects a Luis Suarez cross onto his own crossbar. 

Sergio Busquets is dispossessed midway inside his own half but the referee awards a foul to Inter Miami. That looked a little soft. 

Ronald and Mitchell come on. Stroud and Morgan are replaced. 

Lewis Morgan receives a standing ovation after contributing three goals and an assist today.

Jordi Alba is penalised for a free kick near the touchline, a clumsy challenge made out of frustration. 

Strong run from Campana to come forward and find Suarez on the left. He holds the ball up well but allows NYRB the chance to get back into shape. 

Their attack loses momentum. 

There's a double change for the hosts. Vanzier and Gjangaar and replaced by Hall and Ngoma for the final stages. 

Julian Hall, incredibly, is just 15 years old!

After a quick glance at the screen the referee decides to award the foul, wiping out Noah Allen's goal.

He impressed during his time playing for Inter Miami but Lewis Morgan has taken that to a different level today. The NYRB striker completes his stunning hat trick with this goal. 

This is one-way traffic now, with NYRB completely dominant.

After a breathless spell of action NYRB have raced into a four-goal lead, taking advantage of an Inter Miami side who struggle in transitions. They have outplayed the Herons and deserve their healthy lead. 

NYRB curl in another corner kick and Dylan Nealis is penalised for a clumsy challenge at the back post. 

Inter Miami are still appealing for a foul on Tomas Aviles on the halfway line, but the referee saw nothing wrong with the challenge and the goal will stand. Lewis Morgan has been absolutely outstanding today and claims an assist to add to his brace of goals. 

New York Red Bulls into a commanding lead

Brilliant work from Luis Suarez on the left flank. He curls in a left-footed cross towards Campana, but the Ecuadorian's striker goes just wide of the post. 

Franuel Amaya's corner is a dangerous one but Inter Miami defend it well. 

Powerful running from Stroud on the left to make progress. He finds Morgan on the edge of the box and the goalscorer curls in a cross. The first ball is cleared but it lands at the feet of Duncan on the edge of the box. He shoots, it's pushed wide by Dos Santos. 

Corner kick to Inter Miami. 

Gressel's corner kick goes all the way out to Luis Suarez at the back post. He whips in a front post cross and Meara gets across well to block. 

First touch for Leo Alfonso. He does well on the left and wins Inter Miami a corner kick. 

Noah Allen clips the ball out to Jordi Alba on the left. He curls in a cross but it misses Suarez and Campana in the box. 

Leo Alfonso and Yarrick Bright come on for the Herons. Robert Taylor and Lawson Sunderland are replaced. 

Inter Miami are enjoying a bit more of the possession but still look susceptible at the back to those sharp Red Bulls counterattacks. It looks like Tata Martino is readying some changes.

Here's the second goal from Lewis Morgan against his former team. The finish is almost identical to his goal in the first half, firing low and hard past CJ dos Santos. 

Good ball down the wing to Jordi Alba, who finds Luis Suarez in the middle. The Miami forward recycles the ball and gets his team up the field. 

Inter Miami need to get something going here. They have failed to pose any threat behind the NYRB backline, allowing them to push up the field and press the Miami defence at will. 

Inter Miami play the ball forward to Luis Suarez, who holds the ball well and wins a free kick for his team. 

Lewis Morgan doubles NYRB advantage

NYRB win the ball high and look to create a quick chance. Vanzier tries to whip in a cross but loses his footing and the ball bounces out for a goal kick. 

The rain has slowed at the Red Bull Arena, giving the game a slightly less frantic feeling. Suarez tries to feed a pass through to Sunderland but it's a little under-hit. 

No changes for either team at the break but Inter Miami have started well in the second half. 

Lawson Sunderland head the ball through to Luis Suarez, who briefly looks to have a sight of goal, but he can't quite reach the pass.

Inter Miami behind in rain-soaked New York

The Herons were outplayed in the first half at Red Bull Arena, thrown off their game by an impressive 45 minutes from the New York Red Bulls. 

As we wait for the second half to start the hosts have been out on the field for a good four minutes, waiting for Inter Miami to emerge from the tunnel.

He was one of Inter Miami's best performers in their early season in MLS but Lewis Morgan has come back to haunt his former team today. The New York Red Bulls forward has combined brilliantly with Dante Vanzier throughout the first half and opened the scoring in the first few minutes.

Half time at Red Bull Arena and the hosts have a well-deserved lead. 

Inter Miami need to improve if they are to get back into this game after the break. 

NYRB have a free kick on the halfway line. Dylan Nealis clips the ball forward on the right but it's overhit and goes out for a throw-in. 

That'll be it for the first half. 

We'll have one minute of added time at the end of the first half. 

Miami continue to push and the ball is worked to Luis Suarez. He tries to curl one past Ryan Meara but it's easily saved. 

Inter Miami break up-field with Lawson and Jordi Alba on the left. The Spaniard cross the ball for Campana in the middle but he can't quite get his head on it. 

NYRB are continuing to push for a goal in the final moments of the first half. 

A loose ball into the Miami box drops at the feet of Amaya. He lashes a left-footed volley goalwards but it's a little too high and misses the target. 

Tomas Aviles does well to stop Dante Vanzier in his tracks. NYRB win a throw-in. 

More good play from Dante Vanzier to combine with Franuel Amaya but Miami pinch the ball back. 

Inter Miami come forward again down the left. The ball is tossed into the middle, Lawson Sunderland heads it forward but it bounces out for a goal kick. 

Julian Gressel finally takes the corner kick. It's whipped in low and is easily cleared by NYRB.

Miami try to deliver again but the ball goes out for a goal kick for the hosts. 

Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba want a free kick for that challenge. There didn't look to be anything wrong with Nealis' challenge. 

Franuel Amaya's cross-field pass is cut out and Miami try to take advantage. Jordi Alba makes good progress down the left flank before being stopped in his tracks by Dylan Nealis. 

Inter Miami win the corner kick. 

The hosts try to clip a long pass down the line but the ball goes out for a Miami throw-in. The Herons look to build something now. 

Lawson Sunderland loses the ball for Miami and NYRB come forward again. 

Lewis Morgan tries his luck from distance but he's closed down by Tomas Aviles. The ball is deflected out for a corner kick.

Inter Miami try to build down the right but they lose the ball and work it forward to Dante Vanzier. The NYRB striker leaves Noah Allen for dead but fires wide of the target from close range. 

The hosts should be further ahead!

More good work from the Red Bulls going forward. Kryvtsov is forced to play the ball behind for another corner kick.

NYRB roll the ball into the feet of Morgan, who flicks it around the corner to Vanzier. The striker is through on goal but drags his shot wide of the post. 

That was nearly a role reversal of the early goal!

Good defensive work from Campana but the Red Bulls retain possession.

Sloppy defending from NYRB allows Robert Taylor to win the ball in their penalty box. He pokes the ball to Luis Suarez but he can't get his effort on target. 

That's better from Inter Miami. 

Leonardo Campana wins a free kick in the NYRB half. The hosts win it back and look to launch a swift counterattack but the ball goes out for a Miami throw-in on their left.

The Uruguayan is furious with... something. He berates the referee and receives a yellow card for his troubles. 

More good play from Morgan and Vanzier to work some space for the latter on the right flank. He tries to cross but it's deflected out for a corner kick. 

Good tackle from Lawson Sunderland to halt a Red Bulls attack. 

Luis Suarez wins a free kick on the halfway line, doing well to bring down a long pass. 

That'll give the Miami backline a bit of respite. 

Luis Suarez and Andres Reyes wrestle for the ball in the NYRB box. Suarez goes down and wants a penalty but the ball bounces to Jordi Alba on the left of the box. 

The Spaniard has a pop but his shot flies over the crossbar. 

Inter Miami enjoy a bit of possession in their own half but their hassled by the NYRB forwards. This is a test of Miami's ball-playing abilities. 

More good play from NYRB as Amaya finds Morgan on the edge of the box. He looks to strike at goal but can't make a clean connection and it's easily saved. 

Inter Miami have made a bit of a change in midfield to help deal with Venzier when the NYRB striker drops deep. Gressel and Busquets are now playing in a double pivot, Lawson Sunderland has a freer role further forward. 

That's evidence of the fast start made by the hosts. 

Fanuel Amaya takes the corner kick from the right. His cross is punched away by Dos Santos but NYRB regain possession. 

It's clipped back into the box but Andres Reyes is penalised for a foul. 

Vanzier tries to find Morgan running in behind again. Kryvtsov comes across to intercept and concedes a corner kick. 

The NYRB duo have looked sharp up front. 

Jordi Alba makes good progress down the left and aims for Suarez in the middle. His cross is a little too lofted and Meara comes out to claim it.

Lewis Morgan is back to his feet but definitely seems to be limping slightly after that challenge. NYRB will be eager to see their scorer remain on the field.

Good play from NYRB to play the ball out of defence under pressure from Inter Miami. They will need to be brave to continue their style of play in these tricky conditions. 

First foray forward from Inter Miami finds Robert Taylor in space on the right. He tries to curl in a deep cross but gets the angle all wrong and his delivery goes out for a goal kick.

The hosts have the lead and it's the finish of a confident striker that puts them ahead. Lewis Morgan scored the winner against FC Dallas two weeks ago and he's got them on their way again today. 

The home crowd are in great voice after that early goal, braving the soggy conditions to celebrate that bright start. 

Their opening goal came from a clever flick from Dante Vanzier to put the ball into the path of Lewis Morgan, who bagged his third goal of the season.

As expected, Inter Miami are lining up in a 5-3-2 formation with Robert Taylor and Jordi Alba starting as the two wing-backs. 

Back-up Inter Miami goalkeeper CJ dos Santos is called upon in the opening seconds and does well to charge out of his goal and clear the danger. 

That'll give him some early confidence.

It's a wet afternoon in the Big Apple for today's meeting of New York Red Bulls and Inter Miami. There had been concern of floods near to the stadium today, but local officials were able to confirm that the game could go ahead safely. 

Luis Suarez looks to keep Best XI spot

Last weekend Luis Suarez came off the bench to score twice and turn the game on it's head for Inter Miami. That game-winning brace secured Suarez a place in the MLS Team of the Week, alongside two other Golden Boot contenders.
