Scottie Scheffler is the bookmakers’ favourite to win the British Open at Royal Troon Golf Club - where this year’s champion will pick up not only the famous Claret Jug, but also a cheque for over $3 million.

The 2024 Open, which runs until Sunday July 21, got underway today, Thursday July 18. Take a look at the round-one tee times.

Scheffler seeking rare major double at Open

Scheffler is priced at +550 to win his second major title of the season, having already been victorious at the August Masters in April. Were the world No. 1 to come out on top in Troon, the American would become only the 16th player in the History of men’s Golf to win the Open and another major in the same year.

The most recent player to achieve that feat was Rory McIlroy, who took the trophy at the Open and the PGA Championship in 2014. The Northern Irishman, ranked second in the world, is the second favourite for victory at Royal Troon this week, with the bookies rating his chances of success at +800.

McIlroy, whose long wait for a fifth major title goes on, is aiming to bounce back from his heartbreaking near miss at the US Open last month, when he was pipped to the title by Bryson DeChambeau. The 35-year-old has not added to his four career majors since winning the 2014 PGA Championship.

How much is the 2024 British Open prize purse?

There will be a $17 million prize purse at Royal Troon, which is hosting the British Open for the 10th time. The winner will be paid $3.1 million, with the runner-up on Merseyside in line to pocket $1.76 million. The third-placed finisher is due to receive a payout of $1.128 million.

How much did last year’s British Open winner earn?

This year’s overall Open prize fund is up 3% from the $16.5 million distributed at the 2023 British Open, which was played at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. After winning the first major of his career by finishing six strokes clear on Merseyside, American Brian Harman received $3 million.

Harman is this year bidding to become the first player to win back-to-back Open titles since Padraig Harrington in 2007 and 2008.
