How much is the prize money for the Presidents Cup? What does the winning team get?
The 2024 Presidents Cup takes place from Thursday, September 26 to Sunday, September 29 at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada, wth the International team (excluding Europe), captained this year by Mike Weir, desperate to improve upon their dreadful overall record against Jim Furyk’s Team USA.
How many times has Team USA won the Presidents Cup?
In the 14 previous editions of the tournament, the United States have won 12 times, with the International team’s sole victory coming in Melbourne, Australia all the way back in 1998. There has also been one tie, in George in South Africa in 2003.
The U.S. has won the last 10 Presidents Cups, which includes one prior visit to Montreal in 2007. On that occasion, Jack Nicklaus captained Team USA for the fourth and last time, with David Tomas outscoring Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in a 19.5-14.5 victory against Gary Player’s International team.
17 years later, Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott and Tom Kim will be hoping to lead the hosts to an upset, but will come up against an American team which boasts five players in the top 10 of the men’s world rankings. Headed, of course, by relentless world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, with Xander Schauffele (2), Collin Morikawa (4), Wyndham Clark (6) and Patrick Cantlay (9) also teeing it up.
As has been the case up in the Ryder Cup until now, LIV players are not eligible to feature, which means the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Cam Smith and Joaquin Niemann aren’t playing this week.
However, the PGA of America announced on Thursday that would be changing in the future for the Ryder Cup (and PGA Championship), so we could see something similar happen with the Presidents Cup going forward.
Is there any prize money in the Presidents Cup?
The creation of LIV has driven up prize money on the PGA Tour, but there is none at stake in the Presidents Cup.
Also like the Ryder Cup, players play for the honour of representing their nation/region, and for their love of the game. They aren’t paid to take part in the tournament, although each player taking part is able to allocate an equal portion of the funds generated by the President Cups to the charities of their choosing.
According to the tournament’s official website, “since the inception of the Presidents Cup in 1994, more than $56.4 million has been generated from event proceeds.”
In contrast to the Ryder Cup, in which 28 points are at stake, there are 30 points to play for in the Presidents Cup. The winning team must therefore amass 15.5 points to clinch the trophy, but no additional prize money.
