Horner: 2022 'tough year' after losing Mateschitz

Christian Horner says that 2022 has been a F1XXD6JcMmTdjxESG3d9 year for Red Bull after the sudden loss of founder Dietrich Mateschitz.

The team won both the Drivers' and Constructors' Championship in 2022, but just missed out on securing their first 1-2 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after Sergio Perez finished in third behind Charles Leclerc.

Horner hailed a "unbelievable year" for the team, despite some turbulent moments throughout the season.

"I think for the team, the car, 17 victories, two Sprint race wins, Drivers' Championship, Constructors' Championship, Checo third in the drivers, he drove like lion as well today," he told Viaplay.

"It's been an unbelievable year. There's been ups and downs, but there's been a lot more ups and we'll struggle ever to match this year.

"Particularly in a year when we lost our founder Dietrich, I think he would have been very proud of the results that we've managed to achieve."

Horner: Verstappen's achievements in 2022 'remarkable'

Max Verstappen took his 15th victory of the year in Abu Dhabi, breaking the record he set at the race in Mexico.

Horner paid tribute to Verstappen's 'remarkable achievements' and also to the retiring Sebastian Vettel, who won the team their first Drivers' title back in 2010.

He added: "We say goodbye to Sebastian today and what he achieved was quite outstanding.

"It's remarkable what he's [Verstappen] managed to achieve and the steady progress that he's made.

"Still only 25 years of age, he's getting better, he's still learning, and I think he'll just continue to improve and improve."
