Injury news has not been kind going into FPL Gameweek 25 with Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold, the most-owned defender ahead of the double gameweek, out with a recurrence of a knee problem.
The England international has long been a staple of FPL teams for his clean sheets and attacking returns, but managers now have to pivot to other defenders for points ahead of the weekend.
In conjunction with Fantasy Football Hub's powerful AI Points Predictions tool, here are the best replacements for Alexander-Arnold in FPL Gameweek 25.
Virgil van Dijk
- Fixtures: Brentford (A) & Luton (H); Predicted Points: 8.5
Virgil van Dijk is the best like-for-like replacement for Alexander-Arnold, with Liverpool ranking second for clean sheets this season with eight. Five of those shut-outs have come at Anfield, including one against Brentford in the reverse fixture.
Liverpool have a busy schedule in the next ten days, culminating in the Carabao Cup final, and Van Dijk is the most likely of their defenders to play the most minutes across the double. The Reds do blank in Gameweek 26.
Nathan Ake
- Fixtures: Chelsea (H) & Brentford (H); Predicted Points: 8.2
A Manchester City asset is perhaps the safest buy this week, with Nathan Ake their highest-scoring defender this season. Two games at home bodes well for clean sheet potential, with four of their six shut-outs coming at the Etihad.
Ake carries the biggest attacking threat of the City back-line with five goal involvements this campaign. He notched an assist against Everton last time out and has been an ever-present in Pep Guardiola's defence in the Premier League in the last two months.
Sergio Reguilon
- Fixtures: Liverpool (H) & Manchester City (A); Predicted Points: 5.2
Brentford defenders are worth a look this week given their utility over the next five gameweeks, with the Bees in action frequently despite a couple of blanks for teams elsewhere.
A shut-out against Wolves last time out gives some confidence and wing-back Sergio Reguilon is worth a look, grabbing his first attacking return of the season in the 2-0 away win.
The Spaniard is playing in an advanced role and has the pedigree for attacking returns, taking corners in this Bees side.
