There is a Metropolitan Division tilt on Tuesday evening with the New York Rangers hosting the Philadelphia Flyers. NHL odds have New York as a sizable -180 favorite, while the total sits at 5.5.

The Under has been the bet to make when these two teams have squared off over the past couple of seasons, going 8-2 over the past 10 meetings.

While the trends certainly point to the Under, I believe we are catching plus-money on it in this spot because the market is anticipating that Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson might struggle against New York’s strong offense.

Although Ersson has not had the most consistent season, he is starting to settle in, having allowed three or fewer goals in seven of his past eight starts. The Swedish netminder is 4-2-2 with a .902 SV% and 2.88 GAA over that stretch.

Ersson also played well against the New York Rangers in his first career start against them last month, stopping 22 of 24 shots for a commanding .917 SV%. He also plays behind one of the most underrated defensive teams in hockey, with the Flyers ranking seventh in expected goals against per 60 minutes.

On the back of strong defensive play and Ersson’s recent success, Philadelphia now ranks in the top half of the league in goals allowed per game, shots on goal allowed per game, and penalty kill percentage. However, things have not gone nearly as well offensively, as this group ranks in the bottom 10 of the league in goals scored per game, power-play percentage, and shooting percentage.

Positive regression is unlikely for the Flyers' offense, considering they also rank 24th in expected goals for per 60 minutes.

My best bet: Under 5.5 (+100 at Caesars)

The Flyers offense is going to be in for a particularly tough test as goaltender Igor Shesterkin is slated to guard the cage for New York. Once again rounding out another dominant campaign, Shesterkin is 30-15-2 with a .912 SV% and 2.60 GAA.

He’s particularly seen the puck well recently, allowing three or fewer goals in 11 of his past 12 starts. Shesterkin is 8-3-1 with a commanding .939 SV% and 1.90 GAA over that stretch.

Like Ersson, Shesterkin plays behind a defensively sound team as the Rangers rank in the top half of the league in xGA/60, GAPG, PK%, and penalty minutes taken per game.
