The Edmonton Oilers (3-4-1) take on the Detroit Red Wings (4-4-0) Sunday. Puck drop from Little Caesars Arena is set for 6 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Oilers vs. Red Wings odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.
Season series: First meeting; Oilers won 2-0 last season
The Oilers are coming off a 4-0 shutout of the Pittsburgh Penguins Friday. C Leon Draisaitl netted his 4th goal as Edmonton’s 4 goals tied a season high as the club is 31st in the league with 2.25 goals per Game. They have 4 goals in 3 Games and 2 goals or fewer in the other 5 Games.
The Red Wings are on the back end of a back-to-back after dropping a Saturday matinee on the road 5-3 to the Buffalo Sabres. RW Alex DeBrincat scored his 4th goal and should have had another, but he missed a tap-in on the power play that rode up his stick and went over the empty net.

Oilers at Red Wings projected goalies
Calvin Pickard (1-1-0, 3.28 GAA, .852 SV%) vs. Cam Talbot (2-1-0, 3.21 GAA, .913 SV%, 1 SO)
Stuart Skinner has started 6 of the team’s 8 Games, and this seems like a logical place to get the 32-year-old backup in. His last start came Oct. 17, and he stopped 25 of 27 shots en route to a 4-2 win over the Nashville Predators. Pickard faced Detroit once last season and stopped 16 of 18 in a 3-2 OT winner.
It hasn’t been announced, but this one should be Talbot’s after Alex Lyon started the previous day. He stopped 37 of 40 in a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils Thursday. Talbot faced Edmonton twice in the regular season while with the LA Kings last year. He was 0-1-1 with a 2.46 GAA and .889 SV%.

Oilers at Red Wings picks and predictions
Prediction
Oilers 4, Red Wings 2
Moneyline
This game could go either way, especially with Edmonton struggling to put the puck in the back of the net. So, no thanks to the -250 it would take to bet on the superiorly talented team.
You know who has been completely silent thus far? LW Zach Hyman, the guy that scored 54 goals last season, has 0 goals and 1 assist in 8 games. He scored a goal in each game against Detroit last year and had at least 4 SOG. He had 4+ SOG in 3 of the last 4 games, and I’ll take ZACH HYMAN OVER 3.5 SHOTS (-110).
Puck line/Against the spread
Edmonton has 2 regulation wins, and each were by multiple goals. Each of Detroit’s losses this season have been by multiple goals. The Oilers’ ML was steamed up from -190 to -250, and the puck line went from +125 to +100 in the process of writing this Sunday morning.
Take the OILERS -1.5 (+100).
Over/Under
Edmonton has scored 5+ goals in 4 of 5 meetings with the Wings. However, this team isn’t clicking like that yet. The Oilers are just 2-5-1 O/U while the Wings are 5-3 O/U. This could wind up being 5-3 or 4-3, foiling my prediction, but I’m going to play the trends here and believe the Oilers offense we’re seeing right now.
Take the UNDER 6.5 (+100).
