The hotly anticipated European Championships got underway yesterday, and so too did the transfer market.

Until the end of August, clubs across Scotland have the opportunity to strengthen their squads for the new season.

At Celtic, there is no denying that Brendan Rodgers has a significant job at hand over the coming weeks and months. The echoes of last summer’s poor recruitment remain, with a clearing of deadwood required.

Too many sub-par players did not contribute in the season gone by and while Rodgers needs to rid his team of men like Marco Tilio and Kwon, additions of quality must be made.

There are several areas in the squad which need addressing with ex-Celt turned pundit Chris Sutton naming what should be the ‘priority’ for the Hoops this summer.

“While it’s still very early days in the summer, Brendan Rodgers still needs to make a new No.1 his number one priority”, he said (RecordSport).

“There’s no doubt Celtic will need to do plenty of Business in the window in several areas of the pitch. But they can’t underestimate just how important it’s going to be to land a top-class goalkeeper.

“There is a massive hole to fill following the departure of Joe Hart – and it’s going to be nigh impossible to replace him like for like.”

Goalkeeper is never an easy position to fill, but it is critical that Celtic get it spot on between the sticks this summer.

Joe Hart left a gaping hole both in the team and the dressing room and a replacement for the Englishman needs to be up to the mark.

It is early days in the window yet, but fans won’t want to be going into the first few Games of pre-season with Scott Bain or Benjamin Siegrist in goal.
