Celtic are looking for a new Under-18s coach, and several familiar candidates have emerged as contenders for the role.

Last month, we told you that former playing duo Charlie Mulgrew and Jonny Hayes were in the mix for the vacancy amid Steve McLaren’s departure earlier this year.

Darren O’Dea has also been a moving part in a backroom reshuffle at Lennoxtown and has been appointed as Celtic’s Professional Player Pathway Manager, which has arisen to help broaden the link between the academy set-up and first-team; meanwhile, he is also responsible for loanees on the books.

Brendan Rodgers hailed the former Republic of Ireland international as the ‘perfect candidate’ for the position; however, more changes could now be on the way as the club takes a hands-on approach to matters behind the scenes.

Daniel Kelly and Rocco Vata both fulfilled the prophecy of rising through the ranks to play for the senior side, and each netted their first senior goals for Celtic this season against Dundee and Buckie Thistle, respectively, illustrating the benefits of efficient youth development.

Now, fresh reports suggest movement could be on the horizon as part of a merry-go-round involving coaches at Parkhead.

Adam Asghar emerges as Celtic Under-18’s ‘leading candidate’

According to The Daily Record, Southampton Under-21 head coach Adam Asghar has emerged as a ‘leading candidate’ for the Celtic Under-18’s vacancy, having caught the eye of Rodgers and his backroom team.

The 29-year-old has also previously served in a first-team coach capacity at Dundee United with Tam Courts, Micky Mellon and Liam Fox before heading to Sunderland, who appointed him as Under-18’s lead coach.

His Black Cats’ youth side finished runners-up to Manchester City by four points in the Under-18 Premier League in 2022/23.

According to the outlet, Celtic could make several appointments, factoring in O’Dea’s new pathway role. Positions at the Under-18 and B Team levels are both available, meaning another individual could potentially be hired as part of the club’s desire to take a fresh direction on this front.

Youth development is critical at a club like Celtic, and it is pleasing to see the Hoops looking to prioritise different ways of maximising homegrown talent on their doorstep.
