Bruno Guimaraes agrees Newcastle contract as teammate set for talks
Newcastle United have agreed the terms of a new contract in principle with midfield star Bruno Guimaraes and are set to begin talks with teammate Joelinton, 90min understands.
Guimaraes has been outstanding for Newcastle since arriving from Lyon in January 2022 and the club opened talks over a new deal towards the end of last year. At that time, his form had already started to attract the interest of a number of different clubs.
Talks progressed well and an agreement was close earlier this year. But the deal stalled and Guimaraes himself then admitted there was a "doubt" about the new contract in the summer.
However, 90min understands that there was a clause in another player's contract that needed resolving first. That contributed to holding up talks with Guimaraes, but things have moved on and a deal that will see him become the club's highest earner has been verbally agreed in principle.

Newcastle hope to confirm that contract in the coming weeks as the finer details are finalised. Meanwhile, sources have also confirmed to 90min that the Magpies are planning to open talks with the midfielder's international teammate and close friend, Joelinton.
The 27-year-old has less than two years left on his current deal, which he signed when arriving from Hoffenheim in 2019 in what was then a club record transfer. He has since been successfully converted from a forward into a midfielder, a position in which he has also been capped in by Brazil.
Newcastle have indicated to Joelinton and his camp that they are ready to engage in talks. The Brazilian is understood to be very happy on Tyneside and ready to commit his future to the club.
