Brendan Rodgers’ Derby “Fun” Comment was Taken Out of Context
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has ignited a media storm with his remarks following a commanding 3-0 victory over Hearts, where he mentioned looking forward to having “a bit of fun” in the upcoming Glasgow Derby against Rangers.
It’s even caught the attention of the Rangers boss, who said the comments were disrespectful and that he would never say that about an opponent, despite saying after his side’s win over Kilmarnock his side would also have fun.
The upcoming derby is not just another derby match, it could all but win Celtic the league if they pick up the three points.
Celtic’s strong home advantage and recent form contrast sharply with Rangers’ struggles to secure a win in significant derby matches over the past two seasons. Rodgers’ confident demeanour post-Hearts match reflects his belief in his team’s capability to potentially extend their lead in the league.
However, the media’s response was swift, with headlines focusing narrowly on the “fun” comment, taking his comments out of context, according to Peter Grant.
The former Celtic player weighed in on the controversy during The Go Radio Football Show, saying that Rodgers’ comments were blown out of proportion.
He said: “I know what he’s trying to do, mark it up a little bit. But I can understand.
“I was surprised by Brendan’s comments but when I listened to the context of what he was saying about how hard they’re going to have to work and the preparation and then we’ll have some fun.
“All managers I ever had said that’s the day you should enjoy, should be having fun.
“I think that’s what Brendan was meaning but you’re in Glasgow, you know it’s never taken that way, it’s meaning you’re going to have a fun day against Rangers and I don’t think that’s necessarily what he meant.”
