The St. Louis Blues are off to a hot start to the season. They’ve erased multi-goal deficits in each of their first two games, en route to consecutive comeback wins.

Tonight, my Blues vs. Golden Knights predictions see the Blues falling behind again in this one — but failing to claw back against a deeply talented Vegas team.

Let’s break it all down with my NHL picks for Friday, October 11.

My analysis

Context is important when looking at the St. Louis Blues’ 2-0 start. They’ve fallen behind multiple goals in each game, which is certainly not a recipe for success over time.

Just last season, the Blues won only 10 of 43 games when conceding the first goal — let alone the second on top — and picked up four wins when trailing after 40 minutes. These kinds of comebacks are not going to be consistent.

Their underlying process also has red flags.

Through two games, the Blues have allowed six more high-danger chances than they’ve created at even strength. That’s concerning given the circumstances.

For one, they faced the Seattle Kraken and San Jose Sharks. The former is favored to miss the playoffs, while the latter is expected to be a bottom-three team in the NHL. The competition hasn’t been stiff.

Score effects should have also factored heavily in St. Louis’ favor, as the Kraken and Sharks were up by two and three goals respectively. Teams up by multiple goals tend to play more conservatively, which leads to the trailing team having more of the puck and earning larger shares of the shots and chances.

The fact that the Blues also allowed more Grade A looks than they generated over the two games is alarming.

The Vegas Golden Knights are a big step in class from what the Blues have dealt with thus far. They feature star power in Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, and Shea Theodore — and are also a titan to deal with on home ice (27-12-2 record at T-Mobile Arena last season).

Playing at home against a mediocre Blues team suiting up for the third time in four nights, the Golden Knights should take care of business inside 60 minutes.

The Blues have allowed 33 Grade A chances through two games despite facing off against mediocre competition. Playing their third game in four nights, this is a spot where the Golden Knights should take advantage.

Who better to back for offense than Eichel? He had a monster game in the season opener, generating four scoring chances and producing four assists against a highly talented Colorado Avalanche team.

Eichel had three points and 16 shots on goal over three Games against the Blues last season. Equipped with a Healthy Stone on the top line, he’s in a great spot to do damage.
