Argentina reveal final roster for 2024 Copa América: which big-name players miss out?
Following his team’s final warm-up Game ahead of the 2024 Copa América, in which they defeated Guatemala at CoMMAnders Field in Landover, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has revealed which 25 players will be joining Lionel Messi in his roster for the tournament, which will take place across the United States from Friday 20 June to Sunday 14 July.
The 2022 World Cup winners had gone into their two pre-tournament friendlies with 29 players still part of the squad, with Scaloni using the Games to discard three unlucky hopefuls.
As had been anticipated, defenders Leonardo Balerdi and Valentín Barco, who have won only two caps each, are two of the players to drop out.
Correa, Dybala and Almada to miss 2024 Copa América
Perhaps slightly more surprising is that Atlético Madrid attacker Ángel Correa, who was part of the squad that won the World Cup in Qatar, is the third man cut. The 29-year-old had featured in the friendly against Ecuador at Soldier Field in Chicago on 9 June but hasn’t been retained.
Before this month’s friendlies, Scaloni had already decided there would be no places for Roma attacker Paulo Dybala, who said he had expected to feature, as well as Atlanta United midfielder Thiago Almada, who was also in the World Cup squad but is set to play at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

As Copa América holders, Argentina have been drawn in Group A alongside Canada, Chile and Peru.
Scaloni’s men will play in the opening game of the tournament against the Canadians at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday 20 June.
After that, they will then face Chile at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Wednesday 25 June, before finishing the group stage against the Peruvians at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Sunday 29 June.
The top two teams from each of the four groups will progress to the knockout stages, which begin with the quarter-finals. Should Argentina qualify, as is expected, they will play at either NRG Stadium in Houston on Thursday 4 July or at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Friday 5 July.
