If upgrading to a flip-style foldable phone was a part of your plan after checking out the latest Motorola Razr 50 Ultra, we urge you to wait a bit more. On 10 July 2024, Samsung is hosting another Galaxy Unpacked event to reveal its next-generation Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Fold 6 foldable smartphones along with the much-anticipated Galaxy Ring and the next-gen Galaxy Watch 7 series.

Among the crowd will be the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 – the successor to the vastly improved Galaxy Z Flip 5 that we got our hands on last year. Rumours have claimed wild upgrades and improvements for the Flip 6 for months, especially after the new Motorola Razr 50 Ultra dropped. With a bigger cover screen, a larger battery, advanced optics for the cameras and a multifold improvement in processing, the industry’s expectations were high for Samsung.

However, Samsung seems to have other plans in mind. After the recent round of leaks emerged, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 seems to be all about annual specifications upgrades and not a lot of revolutionary feature additions.

Good or bad? That’s what we are about to find out today. We have curated all the leaked data related to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, including its design renders and specifications to give you a fair idea of what to expect from Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event on July 10.

SPOILER ALERT! If you like to be surprised by Samsung don’t read beyond this point. Visit Augustman on 10 July for more detailed stories on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and comparison with its peers.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6’s rumoured specifications at a glance

In a nutshell, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is a minor upgrade over the Galaxy Z Flip 5. While it may seem boring, it could be beneficial for users in the long run.

Design: Spiced up!

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 was already a stylish phone to admire and hence, Samsung decided to stick with it for another year. From the leaked renders, it seems that Samsung has left the core design dimensions unchanged on the Flip 6. It still features the folder-shaped cover display, flat sides, uniform yet notable bezels around the main display and a host of light colours.

However, Samsung has figured out a clever way to distinguish the Flip 6 from the Flip 5. Look closely and you will observe the colour accents surrounding the camera housings. This gives the phone a fresh look and feel compared to what we saw on the Flip 5.

Rumours also hint at improved hinge mechanisms and several weight reduction measures to improve usability. Samsung is also expected to include dust resistance alongside the water resistance certification. The main display’s flexible glass is also expected to be stronger, thereby preventing damage under extreme weather conditions. The fingerprint sensor, however, still rests on the power button.

Display: No changes here

Initial rumours surrounding the Galaxy Z Flip 6 suggested bigger changes to the cover display. However, Samsung isn’t changing a lot in this regard.

The folder-shaped 3.4-inch cover display will continue to use a 60Hz AMOLED panel but Samsung might upgrade the glass protection. The main display will measure 6.7 inches and feature a flexible AMOLED display with a variable refresh rate of 1-120Hz and a peak brightness rating of 2,600 nits.

Performance: The annual increment

As with every generational upgrade, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is expected to get a new engine under its hood. Unlike the Galaxy S24 series’ Exynos 2400 chip, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will stick to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is currently the best chipset available for Android phones to rely on, especially for generative AI tasks. Samsung’s Galaxy AI suite of Gen-AI features and services will be the core upgrade for the Flip 6. Rumours suggest that Samsung could deploy a passive cooling solution to keep thermal throttling in check.

We also expect Samsung to enrol the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in its seven-year OS update cycle after announcing the same for the Galaxy S24 series. However, the phone is expected to launch with the older Android 14-based One UI 6 instead of Android 15.

Cameras: Superior imaging on the cards

Cameras haven’t been a strong suit of Samsung’s flip phones but this year, things might finally change for good. Rumours suggest that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will replace the dated 12-megapixel image sensor in favour of a new 50-megapixel image sensor for the primary wide camera.

This 50-megapixel sensor should allow users to get 2x lossless digital zoom, just like the iPhone 15’s camera system. The second camera is expected to remain unchanged, featuring the same old 12-megapixel sensor with an ultrawide lens. The video call camera on the main display is also expected to retain the older 10-megapixel sensor shooter.

Battery: A boost for stamina

Similar to its predecessors, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will oversee an upgrade in its battery capacity. Leaked regulatory filing suggests that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will feature a 3,790mAh battery, which is a modest upgrade over the Flip 5’s 3,700mAh tank. Combined with the power-efficient 4nm Snapdragon chip, this should theoretically deliver better battery life than its predecessor.

As for charging, we expect Samsung to offer its standard 25W wired and 15W wireless charging solutions on the Flip 6.

Price: More value for money?

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 came with a price hike across all markets but this year, we don’t expect to see a notable jump. The base model could start with a price of approximately SGD 1,500, thereby offering better value than its predecessor.
