Silent Hill 2's Movie Adaptation Could Feature Big Plot Changes

After over a decade without a new Game in the series, it's possible that 2023 could be a big year for Silent Hill. Not only do we have several new Silent Hill Games in development at the moment, but a movie adaption of Silent Hill 2 called Return to Silent Hill is also in the works. However, if you were hoping this adaptation would stick to the Game's story, we have some bad news for you.

The first plot synopsis for Return to Silent Hill seems to have leaked via a German movie website, and there are two instances hinting that the movie may be making some big plot changes. The first is how the synopsis explains James Sunderland has returned to Silent Hill in order to find Mary Crane. The original Game has James searching for his wife who is known as Mary Shepherd Sutherland, suggesting either a simple name swap or the two having a different relationship.

What makes the plot synopsis even more interesting though, is that it includes a name Silent Hill fans have never heard before - Jacob Crane. The synopsis stops short of telling us who Jacob Crane is or what his relationship to Mary Crane might be, but it does explain that James could see himself fall "into the gloomy underworld of Jacob Crane." Either it's a bit of a translation error, or the synopsis is setting up this Mysterious Jacob Crane as some kind of supernatural figure.

Right at the end of the synopsis, it also reveals that Jeremy Irvine is being tipped to play James Sutherland, an actor who has previously starred in big titles such as War Horse and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!. Of course, it's worth noting that none of this has been confirmed yet, but we'll likely learn if these details are accurate soon, as Return to Silent Hill is set to release at some point towards the end of 2023.
