Rodgers’ Praise for Falkirk Twisted into a Rangers Debate

Brendan Rodgers raised a few eyebrows following Celtic’s 5-2 win over Falkirk in the quarter-finals of the Scottish League Cup on Sunday.

In his post-match interview, the Celtic manager complimented Falkirk, claiming they were “the toughest team” Celtic had faced so far this season. However, some in the media were quick to stir up controversy, trying to turn the comment into a slight against Rangers, who Celtic had already beaten 3-0 earlier in the season.

That Rangers match, however, was far from the test some expected. Celtic comfortably won the Game at Celtic Park, not having to hit top gear. Rodgers’ remark wasn’t a dig at Rangers but rather an honest reflection of Falkirk’s performance on the day. Despite making several changes to the starting line-up, Celtic were given a real scare by the Championship side. Twice, the Bairns took the lead and showed real intent, playing out from the back and beating Celtic’s press on more than one occasion.

It’s not often that Celtic are forced to chase a Game against lower league opposition, but Falkirk’s efficiency and willingness to have a go certainly tested the Bhoys. They made life difficult, showing confidence in their own Game plan and forcing Rodgers’ men to dig deep.

The turning point came from Celtic’s bench, with academy graduate with Nicolas Kuhn coming on to grab two assists and two goals. The bhoys running out 5-2 winners in the end.

For those looking to fuel the rivalry between Celtic and Rangers at every opportunity, Rodgers’ praise for Falkirk was nothing more than a reflection of the effort they put in. The idea that this somehow had to involve Rangers is simply ludicrous. The truth is, Falkirk were deserving of the Celtic boss’ respect, and trying to twist his words into something they weren’t only detracts from the quality of Football on show.

It’s a shame that every comment from Rodgers is scrutinised in this way, especially when it concerns a team that gave their all and came close to pulling off an upset. Instead of drawing needless comparisons, it might be better to focus on the Football for once.
