Respawn's Star Wars FPS Is Inspired By Dark Forces And Jedi Knight
Respawn Entertainment's untitled Star Wars FPS will take inspiration from some beloved Star Wars shooters, including Dark Forces and its sequel Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2.
We're only one short month away from the release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and, while fans have been waiting four years to see more of Cal's adventure, it's far from the only Star Wars project that Respawn is working on. Last year, EA announced that Respawn was also working on a Star Wars strategy Game and a Star Wars first-person shooter.
Details on both projects have been slim since they were announced, likely because they're still early in development, but a recent job posting from Respawn (as spotted by eXputer) has given us an idea of some of the inspirations behind the Game. Notably, it seems that Dark Forces and its sequel, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, are two Games that Respawn has looked to when creating its own Star Wars FPS.
Job listings for roles on the Star Wars FPS read, "In collaboration with Lucasfilm, the Star Wars FPS Team is developing a new AAA FPS in the Star Wars galaxy. Inspired by classic titles like Dark Forces and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, our story-driven single-player Game is being developed from the ground up leveraging the power of Unreal Engine 5".
It seems that the project really is early in development, though, as the new listings are for a lead mission designer, a cinematic lead, and a lead lighting artist. This suggests that Respawn is still staffing some pretty important roles for the Game and that it's not too far along. Still, considering the project was announced more than a year ago now, it's nice to get a little update on how development is progressing and, more importantly, see what other Star Wars Games Respawn is looking to for inspiration.
Dark Forces and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 are some pretty good choices, as far as muses go. The first Game is fondly looked back on as being one of the most influential Star Wars titles out there, as well as a solid FPS in its own right. The sequel is sadly less talked about, but still considered a classic.
