Pokemon Anime Fans Think A Different 'Mon Should Have Replaced Pikachu

More details about the future of the Pokemon anime were revealed last week, including news that Ash's Pikachu will be replaced by a different Pikachu. However, it seems some fans were hoping another Pokemon would get a chance to shine in the anime spotlight.

Pokemon revealed a new character will join the anime alongside Liko and Roy named Friede. Friede will have his own Pikachu, a seafaring version sporting a captain's hat. An adorable new addition to the show, but some fans don't think Ash's Pikachu should be replaced with another Pikachu.

As highlighted by Serebii's Joe Merrick in response to those bemoaning the fact we're getting another Pikachu, it's actually fairly simple. Like it or not, Pikachu is Pokemon's mascot. Sega has Sonic, Nintendo has Mario, Disney has Mickey Mouse, and Pokemon has Pikachu. As long as there's an anime, there's probably going to be an ever-present Pikachu at its core.

When one fan claimed the same can be said of Ash, Merrick highlighted that while that's certainly true for the anime, Ash's Pokemon reach doesn't extend to all corners of its universe. Pikachu, on the other hand, very much does. While it isn't front and center in all of the Games, it's in pretty much all of them. There are also countless Pikachu trading cards, and while I don't know this for a fact, if I had to bet money on which Pokemon has been turned into a plush more than any other, it would be going on Pikachu.

Speaking of which, you can probably expect to see Captain Pikachu turn up in other Pokemon media over the course of the next year or so. Perhaps as a special edition Pikachu in Pokemon Go and almost definitely as a plush. As for regular Pikachu, his and Ash's final run continued in Japan last week as the pair was reunited with the Lapras they spent some time with in the very first season.
