BIGGEST MARINE ENGINE EVER MADE

The Wärtsilä RT-flex96C is a turbocharged, two-stroke piston diesel engine designed to power large container ships and is the world’s largest engine.

Built at Aioi Works of Diesel United, Ltd.,

Japan, it measures 27 meters (88 ft 7 in) long, 13.5 meters (44 ft 4 in) high and weighs over 2,300 tons.

Using advanced fuel injection methods that eliminate traditional camshafts, sprockets, fuel pumps and hydraulic actuators,

the 14-cylinder version’s power output reached 84.42 Megawatts (114,800 bhp [brake horsepower]) in 2008.

Thus, it achieved better performance with lower fuel consumption and lower harmful emissions.

The engine powers the MV Emma Maersk, the world’s largest container ship.
