More than a year after Nintendo announced it would be shutting down its 3DS and Wii U stores, the day is finally upon us. Later today, support for both online stores will end and you'll be unable to buy Games from them. If there's something you've had your eye on, buy it now before it's too late, and wave goodbye to the 3DS bag guy while you're at it.

For more than a decade, people buying Games through the 3DS eShop have been met by a smiling shopping bag every time they've made a purchase. 3DS owners appear to have been hit with the realization over the weekend that after today, bag guy will be gone forever, possibly coming to that conclusion as they made some of their final purchases.

“The 3DS & Wii U Nintendo eShop will be shutting down March 27. Make this guy smile one more time,” one 3DS owner tweeted. “RIP lil bag guy that everyone loved, homie didn't deserve to be put down,” another tweet reads. The unnamed character didn't make the jump over to the Switch for some reason, so once the 3DS store closes later today, it will take the little smiling shopping bag along with it.

Or maybe not. Lizzylizzin points out that you may still have a way to see them again once March 27 has been and gone. Even though you'll no longer be able to buy Games through the eShop, you'll still be able to re-download the ones you've previously bought. Apparently, the sentient shopping bag also shows up when you re-download a Game.

While bag guy might not have received much attention lately, there was a time when they were so well-loved that a few of you were pushing for them to be added to Super Smash Bros. If there's ever another installment in the series, maybe bag guy will be added as an item or a trophy. Expecting them to be a fully playable character might be asking a little much, though.
