2021's Mortal Kombat finally gave fans of the series what they wanted – over the top action, corny acting, brutal fatalities, and references galore. It wasn't a great movie in terms of acting or writing, then again, neither is the source material. Apart from the bloodshed and Fatalities, the best part about the movie was undoubtedly Hiroyuki Sanada's portrayal of Hanzo Hasashi, aka Scorpion. The Actor's menacing demeanor perfectly fit the role of everyone's favourite fiery undead yellow ninja.

A sequel for the movie was confirmed in early 2022 and, according to the tease at the end of the movie, Johnny Cage will play a central role in it. However, Sanada has still not got word about his return as Scorpion. Speaking to IGN during a press junket, Sanada was asked if he'll be returning to the role. “I hope so,” he said, suggesting that the producers haven't yet gotten in touch with him. While we can't be certain, this is probably because the movie is still in its scripting phase.

Based on the reception the movie received, fans will be hoping to see Sanada put on the recognisable yellow gi and say the iconic line in the sequel. Even his John Wick: Chapter 4 co-star Shamier Anderson wanted to see him as Scorpion again, adding, "I hope so, too. Come on, are you kidding me? He’s the man.”

It's unclear when we'll finally see Mortal Kombat 2, but according to a Warner Bros. earnings call, we might see Mortal Kombat 12 some time this year. It was named along with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League as a Game Warner Bros. expects to launch this year and expects to perform well.

"...And there's lots more to come, including the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 12 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Games also set for release this year with ambitious launch projections."

We don't really have any other details about Mortal Kombat 12, but fans have already started discussing which guest characters they want to see. Isaac Clarke, Altair, Kill Bill's The Bride, and DC's Lobo were all in the running.
