Luke McCowan’s Classy Phone Call to Dundee Boss After Celtic Move
A week on from transfer deadline day, the dust seems to have finally settled on what was a frantic summer window for Celtic.
The club were busy in the market for short-bursts, but they seemed to truly come alive towards the end of it, bringing in Auston Trusty, Arne Engels, and Luke McCowan all in the final hours.
A combined £17m was spent on the services of Trusty and Engels, but McCowan joined from Dundee for a humble £1m.
A boyhood Celtic fan, the 26-year-old had no doubts about joining the club.
His move was made official late on Friday night, and he was thrown into the Glasgow derby less than 48 hours later.
McCowan has gone from being a big fish in a small pond at Dens Park to quite the opposite in Glasgow. Despite this, his experiences with Dundee will have served him well.
Dees boss Tony Docherty played a key role in his development, with McCowan standing out under Derek McInnes’ old assistant last term.
Although he lost a key player, Docherty was delighted to see the midfielder make the move of his dreams.
Amidst the frenzy and chaos of his switch, though, McCowan still found time to get in contact with his now ex-boss and thank him for everything, but he was almost running on empty.
“For Luke, I couldn’t be more happy”, said Docherty (RecordSport).
“You’ve seen all the pictures and his reaction. He phoned me Saturday night and said he’d only [had] five hours sleep, he’s absolutely running on adrenaline.
“He was actually meant to come see us on Monday but I said just get your head down, get a sleep, catch up on your hours and we’ll catch you another time.
“We are all absolutely delighted for him, you couldn’t ask for a better boy.”
Seeing the role McCowan takes up in the Celtic squad this season should be intriguing.
He likely won’t be a consistent starter but rather will contribute often and prove to be an adept and reliable asset.
