Lakers’ Secret Plan To Steal Luka Doncic From Mavericks Revealed

The Los Angeles Lakers have had a very disappointing 2024 offseason. After coming into the summer with hopes of adding a big name like Klay Thompson, DeMar DeRozan or Dejounte Murray, they wound up getting none of the above.

Worse yet, L.A. didn’t even make minor improvements around the edges. The front office made some draft picks in the worst NBA Draft of the past two decades, was forced to settle for J.J. Redick as a head coach after being spurned by better options, and now faces the prospect of entering next year with a worse roster than last season’s.

There’s a reason why the most viral story of the summer for the Lakers was Vanessa Bryant and Pau Gasol’s wild vacation photos. It is because the team itself had little of substance to follow.

One of the main reasons why the Lakers had so much trouble improving the roster this summer was because they refused to part with their future draft picks.

Why would a franchise in win-now mode, with a 39-year-old LeBron James on the team, not want to trade future picks for a legit star?

Because apparently it is part of a longstanding plan to steal Luka Doncic way from the Dallas Mavericks.

This week Kevin O’Connor broke down the Lakers’ longstanding plan to steal Doncic away from the Mavericks.

“I’ve reported on this podcast and on The Ringer how [the Lakers] have their sights set for Luka,” he said.

“We’ll see if that works out. Dallas just made a Finals, Dallas is looking better than ever with their supporting cast. That may not work out, but the Lakers by not trading their future picks clearly are still thinking long-term at this point. They’re not going all in like you might expect many teams to do with James.”

Will this plan by the Lakers work? Definitely not. And this is a good reminder regarding why so many teams around the league view L.A.’s front office as ‘inept.’

Lakers fans better get used to the soul-crushing disappointment they faced over the past few seasons, because it looks like they’ll be enduring another decade of it.
