Former footballers often get caught up in the tribal nature of Glasgow’s football rivalry, especially when asked the age-old question: Celtic or Rangers? While it’s not necessarily about who they actively support, it’s more of a nod to the fact that if you’re exposed to the Glasgow derby regularly, you’ll inevitably gravitate towards one side.

Recently, this very question was put to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher during a quickfire round with Micah Richards. Without hesitation, Carragher declared, “I am Celtic,” according to Football Scotland. It’s the sort of answer that sparks plenty of debate among fans, but for Carragher, it seemed pretty straightforward.

Carragher isn’t the only ex-player from England who leans Celtic’s way. Trevor Sinclair, former England international, has been open about his fondness for the Hoops over the years. Unlike some casual admirers, Sinclair’s connection with Celtic runs deep. He’s followed the club through the ups and downs, engaging with the team far beyond surface-level interest.

It’s easy to see why many ex-Footballers south of the border adopt one side of Glasgow’s Football divide. The Glasgow derby is more than just a Game—it’s a culture, and for many, picking a side is a natural consequence of being so close to the action. For the likes of Carragher and others, it seems Celtic have captured their imagination.
