There was Healthy representation from the victorious Ryder Cup-winning team at the 2023 DP World Tour Championship at Juremiah Golf Estates in Dubai, with Rory McIlory, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Tommy Fleetwood among those who teed up this week in the United Arab Emirates. But it was a slightly less stellar European name who outdid his teammates and the rest of the field - Nicolai Hojgaard.

Hojgaard’s round of the day to win in Dubai

The Dane went into Sunday’s final round two shots off the lead held by Matt Wallace, who memorably posted a third-round 60 which included birdies on every hole on the back nine. The Englishman ended up in a tie for second with Hovland and Fleetwood, while Rahm’s 65 was the joint second best round of the day on Sunday to sneak into the top five.

However, it was Hojgaard who went one better, birdieing five of the last six holes for a final-round 64, which saw him win by two. It is the 22-year-old’s first Rolex Series win and third victory on the DP World Tour following triumphs in the Italian Open in September 2021 and the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, also held in the UAE, in February 2022.

Along with the major championships, The DP World Championship is one of the most lucrative tournaments in Golf, with an overall purse of $10.5 million. Hojgaard will take home a cool $3 million after finishing top of the pile, by far the biggest pay check of his career to date.

McIlory, meanwhile, was the other big winner this week, despite finishing in a tie for 22nd, 11 shots off the pace. However, it was already known before the event got underway that he would pocket a $2 million bonus for winning the Race to Dubai money list, in addition to making over $7.5 million from nine events during the season.
