Barbora Krejcikova capped an incredible two weeks at Wimbledon by becoming the ladies’ singles champion, winning her second Grand Slam title at the age of 28 following her French Open victory in 2021.

Krejcikova wins in three sets on Centre Court

Krejcikova prevailed in three sets on Centre Court at the All England Club, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in front of a captivated crowd.

The win secured the 31st seed’s eighth career title on the WTA Tour and her first since she won the Dubai Tennis Championships in February 2023. Krejcikova is also a 10-time Grand Slam doubles champion in both the women’s and mixed events.

Back in June, Wimbledon announced an increase to its overall prize purse for the 2024 tournament, rising to a record £50 million (approximately $64 million). For the second year running, Carlos Alcaraz will take on Novak Djokovic for the same prize in the men’s final on Sunday.

Men and women have received the same amount of prize money at Wimbledon since 2007, the first year of pay equality across all four grand slam events. The US Open was first to do so all the way back in 1973.

This is, however, not the case for the majority of regular-season elite comPetitions, with the Indian Wells Open, the Madrid Open and the Miami Open currently the only tournament which offer the same prize purse to both sexes.
