Horses are loved by many people for their gentleness, loyalty, and beauty. Horses are commonly seen on farms and in rodeos and are valuable assets there.

In spite of that, there are people that abuse horses, neglecting their well-being and causing suffering for the animal. Horse Rescue Day is a day dedicated to protecting horses and aims to show awareness for this sad reality.

History of Horse Rescue Day

Horse welfare has been a concept that’s only occurred over the past few centuries. During the 17th century, Western religious and philosophical beliefs about Animals were that they didn’t have any sensation of pain.  This idea followed Rene Descartes’s theory of the animal machine. However, in Islamic cultures, people had a strong respect for horses.

From the middle ages up to the 19th century, horses dying was considered common and was very much disregarded. It wasn’t until the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded and the publication of the novel Black Beauty that the topic of horse protection became part of the daily conversation.

This debate intensified and passed throughout the United States and Europe over the next century. Various laws were passed to protect horses from abuse and the issues presented resulted in public concern over horses and their welfare.

Throughout the 20th and 21st century, immense changes happened to the way people view horses and treated horses.  This led to anti-slaughter movements and organizations such as the ASPCA that aim to protect Animals from abuse. Today, numerous organizations exist with their own guidelines and procedures on horse rescuing. Many do not get state or federal funding for their rescues.

Horse Rescue Day aims to show how rescue organizations need your help in being able to provide for abused and neglected horses. The holiday celebrates this venture by encouraging people to protect these horses, donate to their local rescue shelter, and bring awareness to horse abuse.

How to Celebrate Horse Rescue Day

If you support the welfare and protection of horses, begin showing your support by donating money and supplies to your local animal shelter. If you love horses, volunteer at the shelter and help out with caring for the horses.

Volunteering can be a great way to bond with the horses, form everlasting relationships with them, and help out the shelter in the best ways you can. Share this holiday on social media to show your love for horses and your advocacy to protect them from abuse and neglect.
