Erling Haaland’s 2022/23 season compared to Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s former records

Erling Haaland has taken the Premier League by storm, setting all kinds of incredible goalscoring feats in his debut season with Manchester City.

He now holds the record for most goals in a single Premier League campaign by one player, having surpassed the numbers set by 1990s stars Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, who both struck 34 times in 42-game seasons.

Cole and Shearer are renowned legends of English football but their former joint-record could be a pretty distant second place by the end of the season. Here's how their records compare with Haaland.

Most Premier League goals from one player in one season

Andy Cole (Newcastle) - 1993/94

• Goals: 34
• Assists: 13

Cole's famous season on Tyneside started slowly, managing only one goal in his first four games. However, they then came thick and fast, with 15 strikes coming in his next 12 matches.

From those 15, he bagged a hat-trick in Newcastle's 3-0 drubbing over Liverpool and picked up braces against Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham and Oldham.

The striker often produced multi-goal showings, including a hat-trick against Coventry and another goal and three assists against West Ham. It did take him until the final day of that term to secure his name in the History books.

Until recently when Harry Kane joined the exclusive club, Cole was the only player to top both the goals and assists charts in one season. Despite all his efforts, Newcastle finished third that year.

Alan Shearer (Blackburn) - 1994/95

• Assists: 13

Newcastle legend Shearer recorded three of the best Premier League scoring hauls for a season in the competition's history, but his 1994/95 effort of 34 is his personal best.

Similarly to Cole, Shearer left it until the last minute to score the record-breaking goal, but this time around Shearer's Blackburn were crowned league champions.

A hat-trick on home soil became his bread and butter during the campaign as he hit trebles in QPR, West Ham and Ipswich's visits to Ewood Park, not forgetting four braces.

Strike partner Chris Sutton was also integral that season. The pair set each other up on 13 occasions, a record for a single campaign until it was broken by Tottenham pair Kane and Son Heung-min.

Erling Haaland (Manchester City) - 2022/23

Haaland entered the league with a huge weight on his shoulders as City's long-term striker solution but he shrugged it off, marking his debut in the league with two goals against West Ham.

He made a truly relentless start, setting the records for most goals scored after five (nine) and nine (15) Games respectively.

Like Shearer, the Norwegian also has an eye for a hat-trick. If Haaland can manage one in City's remaining four Games of the season, he will equal Shearer's record of five in a single campaign.

Haaland equalled Cole and Shearer's record three minutes in against Fulham in late April, in turn bringing up a half-century in all competitions in City colours. The strike against West Ham made it 35 goals for the season, going past the iconic duo to stand alone at the top of the rankings.
