Borussia Dortmund boss Nuri Sahin slammed his players after they were beaten 5-1 by Stuttgart at the weekend.

The Bundesliga side visited the MHPArena high on confidence after defeating Club Brugge 3-0 in their opening Champions League fixture last midweek. What transpired on Sunday, though, was beyond the wildest dreams of both sets of supporters.

Indeed, Deniz Undav opened the scoring early on before Ermedin Demirovic and Enzo Millot made it 3-0 to the hosts just after the hour mark.

Serhou Guirassy got the visitors a consolation before El Bilal Toure and Undav once more added to Dortmund’s woes.

Celtic fans will have been pleased to see BVB lose 5-1 ahead of their clash with the Germans next week.

Their fans aren’t happy with the weekend’s result, and neither is the club’s manager, Sahin, who was heavy in his criticism of his players post-match.

“That was very sobering,” he said (Glasgow Times).

“You can’t perform like that as Borussia Dortmund.

“That was a poor performance. I never want to see a display like that from us again.

“We weren’t at it from the first to the last minute. It felt like we didn’t win a single 50/50 tackle, you can’t play like that.

“Now we need to address this bluntly and call things out.

“You can’t play like that. You can find a million excuses, but none of them are valid.”

Before they welcome Celtic to Signal Iduna Park next Tuesday, Dortmund face Bochum at home in the Bundesliga this Friday night.

The match will be telling of where they are at following their 5-1 defeat to Stuttgart and give Hoops fans a good indication of the side they will face next week.

Regardless of form, though, the matchday two clash is the most difficult of Celtic’s Champions League fixtures on paper.

Brendan Rodgers’ men got off to the perfect start against Slovan Bratislava last Wednesday but face an almighty step up in level next time out in Europe.
