We’re off to mediocre start to the French Open; I went 1-2 on my opening day picks. The first horrible beat of the tournament is already in the books, as Ben Shelton served at 3-5 in the fourth set of his match against Lorenzo Sonego to cash Over 37.5 tickets on the game total. But Shelton got broken to lose the match and end it at 37 games.

Alas, we move ahead as the season’s second Grand Slam continues on Monday – when Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz will be among those taking the court. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs. Arthur Fils Over 35.5 games (-110)

I’m expecting this to be one of the best matches of the day and perhaps of the entire first round. Davidovich Fokina is a considerable favorite, but Fils has been one of the breakout stars of tour in 2023. The 18-year-old Frenchman’s biggest highlight came this past weekend at home in Lyon, where he secured his maiden ATP title. Fils doesn’t get much rest, but that shouldn’t be a problem for a teenager in supreme shape who didn’t exactly have to Travel a long way from Lyon to Paris. For what projects to be a very comPetitive matchup, 35.5 is an incredibly low number.

Parlay: Stan Wawrinka ML over Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Peyton Stearns ML over Katerina Siniakova (-104)

Wawrinka is 7-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against Ramos-Vinolas and is 16-2 in total sets. There is no reason to think the tide is going to turn now, as Ramos-Vinolas owns a 6-16 match record this season. Keep in mind, too, that Wawrinka loves Roland Garros; he is a former champion (2015).

Meanwhile, Siniakova has not played a single match since the Miami Open in March because of a wrist injury. She hasn’t won a match since late February. During this time Stearns has been winning left and right. The former Texas Longhorn is 30-8 overall in 2023 and her 16-5 clay-court record includes a quarterfinal showing in Rabat a few days ago.

Ysaline Bonaventure +4 games over Anna Blinkova (-125)

Blinkova just finished runner-up in Strasburg on Saturday, but it’s rarely a good thing when you go deep in a tournament right before a Grand Slam. The 24-year-old Russian also has the misfortune of playing on Monday instead of Tuesday at Roland Garros, so she does not have a lot of time off in between tournaments. Fatigue will likely be a factor, and Bonaventure should be able to capitalize. The Belgian has not lost a match in straight sets since Indian Wells in early March, a stretch of 11 consecutive matches in which she has either won or at least pushed it to 3. Bonaventure will almost certainly be competitive in this contest and she even has a good chance to pull off an outright victory.
